Has there been any run size forecasts for Port sockeye or springs yet this year.
Area 23 Harvest Round Table met last week to review the various forecast models and determine how to shape the fishery for the start of this season. After reviewing all the models, the HRT landed on low moderate abundance forecast (500,000), some models predicted lower - others up to 700K. Bottom line is we really need to see how the early fishery data comes in as this is the real way we ground truth and update the forecast. There are fish counters in both rivers, so the test fishery result data is augmented with real-time river escapement counts. Generally we aren't in a position to have sufficient data on run size and timing until around June 20.

From a recreational fishery perspective we will start the season at 4/day limits, and adjust downward if the forecast numbers do not materialize in the test fishery and in-river escapement counts. The HRT meets weekly to review observed fishery and in-river escapement results - and will make adjustments to fishery decisions on short notice if trends dictate. Sustainable harvest is the priority.

Starting to see sockeye running through the counters, and I spotted some jumpers in the canal this week. Big question for the recreational fishery will be what happens with the river run-off. In seasons where we have high river levels and poor weather the fish will blast through the inlet and not hold or school up. In those seasons even with a million fish returning the recreational fishery is poor. We need the fish to hold up in the inlet and school up to create good sockeye fishing opportunities. Warm weather in late June, combined with lower river levels usually produces the best fishing. Still lots of snow up on the hills - anyone's guess as to how this season will develop.

Beautiful weather and pretty good fishing this weekend. Cape Beale was producing well on the mid-ebb tide with it being a bit inconsistent at other times. 90% hatchery marked springs between 6-18 lbs. They were taking white hoochies and spoons between 80-50 feet.
Any squid in their bellies?

None. Medium size herring and needlefish.
Ya there were southswell! Forget who cut that one open but there was a single very large squid in one of the bellies. You musta been cooking a hot dog or something when that happened.
But yep a good time out there (maybe had a little too much fun). I never made it out to beal in my 17' this week but picked up a few at whittlestone. Good times all around.

Any reports on bigger springs coming into the sound? Im spending a few days in bamfield this weekend to try to get some fish in the freezer.

Ripped up to Bamfield for the long weekend with the family and managed to hook into some fish but nothing too big yet.. all in the 6 - 8lb range but far in few between.. Seemed to be a Lot of shakers hanging around. Focused mainly on the wall, whittlestone, and beale. Early morning low tides were when the fish got hungry and the wind was lighter. Sunday got blowy and it was time to go home. Looking forward to the summer runs thats for sure.

I'll be fishing Bamfield on the last week of July, Is there any point bringing prawn traps then? Not sure if the commercial is still open by then.
