2021 Winter Harbour Reports

I chickened out in the fog this morning and didn’t make the run all the way to cliff. Stuck around quatsino and the narrows. Lots of shakers on spoons. Bites were relatively deep- 60-80ft down. Took home one “slot size” which is a pretty small fish… but any way, no coho inside yet that I could find. A few people playing the same game I was today, didn’t see anything landed. Hope the bite was on further out for those that burned the fuel!

Good idea I fished in the fog before I knew where the tankers were and I went home 50km in pure fog and all I had was a gps. Looking back it was a really bad idea I just went out into the straight where no boats would be anchored and went purely on gps. Looking bad it was really really stupid.

But those are usually filled with the best memories and laughs… after you get your breath back

Went to winter harbour Friday-Sunday with my girlfriend and good buddy. We launched in cole harbour Thursday night at midnight slept on the boat and headed off to set out our traps at 5am Friday. Got to cliffe around 7:30 and trolled till 10:30 with nothing but shakers, didn’t see anything landed. Headed into winter harbour to pay for morrage and unload some gear and a nap. Went back out in the mist and rain to kains from 3pm-7pm landed 3 wild coho (5-6pounds) and lost a couple more. Satureday morning got up in the mist and fog and went to grant bay, lines in around 6:45 double header with springs in the first 10 minutes landed one at 18 pounds, got another 30 mins later at 20 pounds and lost one more before headed out for some halibut action, noticed lots of blue sharks swimming on surface and one ended up attacking a canary rockfish and got its self hooked, got 4 hali in a couple hours (74,83,89 and 91cm). Went and jigged for lings and got a couple nice eating size 12 pounders, went back to grant bay to try for a night bite at 8:45 pm and within an hour we had 4 springs (20,22,22,27 pounds) we had the whole bay to our selves, so Sunday morning got up early and headed back to grant bay lines in at 5:30 and by 7:15 we had our 6 springs in the boat all over 20 pounds, multiple double headers, fishing turned on for us, trolling fast and lines at 24and 26’ in 30’ of water right on the beach small 4-5” anchovies 5-6’ leader and hotchie 3-4’ leader

We will be in Winter Harbour with the kids for the first time this Saturday - can't wait. Has anyone trailered their boats all the way to Winter recently? What is the road like?

Haven’t done the road in a year but would not recommend trailering a boat over it

I just drove the road on Monday. . Its a bit washboard here and there but not too bad . Few potholes after the last week of rain. Lots of guys trailering boats in no problem. 21' Thunderjets . 32' trailers in the RV sites as well. Just take your time. Probably 1.5 -2 hrs on the gravel off the highway . Launch at Winter Harbour Rv site. Mike will put you in with his tractor. Super easy! Have a great trip!

Fished Wednesday and Thursday. Fished mostly offshore. Lots of fish around. Hitting lots of springs down deep, nothing huge but good average size. Hoochies and spoons is what we were using the whole time, lots of squid in the bellies. Picked up coho inshore. Great bottom fishing
