In addition to the above, we caught coho near the mouth of Wells Passage and Fife, both areas still open in August. Largest was 11 lbs. Didn't try for halibut, as tides were big, swinging from less than 1' to over 17'. Also heard good things about Bere Pt for springs.Randy, the guide in Sointula, was catching at Ledge Pt about a week ago - 3 over 30 one morning. More under 80 cm.
We caught one 95 cm and one 85 in Wells and Fife middle of last week. Unfortunately a month too early to keep. 55' on anchovies.
Just came back from 4 days at Telegraph Cove. Never been before - beautiful area with more humpback whales and orcas then anywhere else I have been. TC resort is nice, but caters to the kayaking and whale watching crowd more then rec fishers IMO. Weather was clear and windy the first day then very nice after that.
We fished all over, from Wells Passage, Mitchell Bay, George Bank, Flower Island, Cracroft Pt., Donegal Pt, Lizard Pt. and Black Bluff. Probably covered close to 100 miles to find springs. Got coho at Donegal Pt. and Lizard Pt. Only found springs at Black Bluff.
Over all very few springs to be found. Got a nice 125+lb. halibut at George Bank that we released and got some nice ling cod to keep. Green chrome and herring aid teaser heads between 50-110 ft. (depending on location) worked for us. All on all a great time was had and another place to add to the experience list!
Good place to fish if its foggy, or too windy on the Bere Pt side. That's what my uncle has said. Apparently a 42lb was caught in that area. So the talk was at the dock. Can't wait for Friday morning and 8 days more for my chance. Hope they are still around.
Just back from trip with chris73 and chunk of it fishing with whole in the water. Definitely not like last year was for us but we still made out well putting in the hours. Found a 40 something and a 15 hali, springs 20 (released) off mitchell, 18, 15, 12, 10, 7, 7, couple of coho 6-8, couple of pinks, few good hits - mostly north side between bluffs and slide. Couldn't find lings for us and it wasn't without trying all sorts of spots. Key for salmon seemed to be deeper - was a bit of an algae bloom and assume they are all travelling under - absolutely nothing up shallow. Weather was ugly day 1, absolutely perfect the rest of the time - can't complain. Probably 20 humpbacks and a small pod of orcas.
happens every year when the nimpkish fish are returning but from what ive heard its a right tide, even bite, there one day gone the next type deal.Eden, heard the same about front of town. Go figure.
Try the new Devil's Bath microbrewery in Port McNeill -- 6 kinds on tap, and a small but decent menu. Huge patio. Will be mooring in Telegraph again this Sept long weekend.
Not much of a fishing trip for us, but do head out for some tides, will target bottom fish more than salmon. Hope to get an "elusive to me" hali.
Enjoy a relaxing time away, hit up the restaurant for some great food. Lol
Hope the weather is as nice as it was last yr.
3 boats at the moment will be there.
