First Nootka report of the year. Thanks for sharing. I assume you didn’t try Beano? What kind of bait did you see? Sounds like a great time even if weather was marginal.Just got back from a quick weekend trip out to Nootka. The wind was blowing and the rain was pouring but there were fish around. lots of little ones everywhere we went. We kept 11 springs and got 2 coho although we didnt boat any bigger ones. All were 7-12lbs. we had kids out and first timers so it was a great time. We did lose a couple screamers though. Fished a couple hours each morning is all. Burdwood, Friendly Cove and San Carlos all had good action. San Carlos to Beercan bay had the most springs and biggest ones too. bait everywhere. Coho at the lighthouse too. People on radio were fishing 140ft and hitting them, we got ours with 35-45 on the riggers.
heading back on the 23rd, hope we can get offshore on the next go around.
we tried a few hoochies, flash flies and spoons. We found spoons to work the best for us. The fish had anchovies in their stomachs and lots of them more of a medium size this year as opposed to smaller sized the last couple years. We didnt try Beano because couldnt get around the corner from the lighthouse because of the swell.First Nootka report of the year. Thanks for sharing. I assume you didn’t try Beano? Should be able to muster your 10 springs and 6 halibut the first week.Almost ready to rock, should have the boat in the water in Tahsis the 17th. Will be on the water 60 days from June18-Aug22. Excited but a 33 day straight stretch is gonna be a grind. Hopefully they are on the surf-line thick again this summer!View attachment 67154

Any reports this week??? Anyone fishing and hopefully catching??? 5 days till first trip and can hardly stay still or focus on anything.
Just got back from Nootka, staying at Critter Cove. Had a great time even though the weather was absolutely God-awful. Very strong winds blowing straight up the coast from Estevan Pt meant that there was basically nowhere on the outside that you could fish in sheltered waters… That, plus it rained sideways most of the time too. Now, having said that, when you could fish, the fishing was excellent at all the normal spots on the outside. We like to fish right tight to the rocks in the normal outside spots, and it was a real chore just working the boat, much less working the gear. But, the fishing was absolutely first class, lots of fish around. We caught many springs up to 25 lbs, releasing the vast majority of them. Skinny G spoons and off-white glow hoochies seemed to be the weapon of choice for us, right down in the mud. The fish were full of squid. Today the weather flattened right out and it was beautiful outside, lots of rain but no wind, could have gone anywhere you wanted, fishing was outstanding. It was all absolutely wonderful, couldn't have wished for a better time out at camp.
Sounds like a decent trip.....hopefully they hang around for the weekend.
Thanks for the update Pacemaker
Hi Wayne, Yes it was another fun and eventful trip. As long as the winds stay down a bit, then everyone in the J&J Derby should get a fair number of fish. Should be a good time for you and all the others. Good luck again…Sounds like a decent trip.....hopefully they hang around for the weekend.
