Hey guys. I think it’s time my 454 needs a freshen up or possibly a new long block. I’ve been digging around some other forums on rebuild vs new and would like to know some of your personal experiences or opinions. Boat is a 1989 searay 268 sundancer with a mercruiser 454 (330hp) with just shy of 1800 hrs now and a bravo 1. The boat has been burning oil for as long as I’ve had the boat but this is normal for big blocks or so I’ve read, but this year it seems like it’s consuming more and is now causing other problems I suspect. I am going to do a compression and leak down test on the motor to get some better insight into the problem. I’m suspecting it needs rings and possibly valves. So long and short I’m looking into rebuild options or the possibility of just purchasing a new long block as they call it. Anyone have any experience with companys that sell crate long blocks? There are lots of options. Or if anyone has one lying around in good shape!
