What he said was true. People are moving to this country because of the freedoms and choices we have because of the sacrifices made by the men and women who gave their life for them. He was just saying educate the new and let them know why Canada is the choice of many. People are way too soft. Lefties will take it all away if they get their way.

I was starting to think there wasn’t any like minded people on this forum.

This country has become so pussified by the left as reflected by the way the fishing regulations have been influenced by the left.

I wasn’t really a big fan of Cherrys but I agreed with his sentiment about honoring our troops. How many of those Sportsnet big wigs spent Christmas Day with our military people overseas?

But you see this is exactly what's wrong with our Country (and others) right now. Nobody is disagreeing that wearing the poppy is the right thing to do. He was right that they made the ultimate sacrifice and that we all should pay our respects. BUT, there is no room in any society to single out any one group as "you people". He was fired for generalizing immigrants. The very people that make Canada what it is still to this day. He was right that the importance of the poppy should be known and taught to all that want to call Canada home. So stop arguing THAT point. Just get over that for one second and try and agree that nobody in this world should be lumped into a group and called out by a rich old white guy on National television. Nobody. Think about the immigrants that WERE wearing them that got painted with that same brush. That's what is being debated here.

It's a private broadcaster and they have the right to do make whatever staffing decisions they want IMO. But his comments don't bother me; he calls them like he sees them. If he lives somewhere there's lots of new immigrants and he sees a trend emerging with how they do or don't adapt, he's got a right to say so. Even if he's wrong, that changes nothing; people have a right to express their beliefs, and I don't think we're all obligated to believe in tolerance as an ideal. Some people may, some people may not. Freedom includes the right to hold differing opinions on fundamental values.

That doesn't mean he has a right to say it at work while getting paid by his employer or a right to face no consequences for expressing his beliefs, but he could shout it from the rooftops every day for a year and I would never say he shouldn't.

There’s a fundamental difference between these two that must be acknowledged. Trudeau acknowledged that his actions were wrong and he apologized for them. Cherry stands by his words and refuses to apologize for them. As also noted in another post, Cherry is not elected, and Trudeau is. No one questions that both have freedom of expression (which does have legal limits in Canada), but both also face consequences for their expression.

So a bull **** apology from a lying snake means more to people than a man being honest about the way he feels and what he observes. This is now the accepted way things are done.
Personally I think Don knew he was on the way out and wanted to go out with a bang, he’s that type of guy, way to smart not to know there would backlash from this. Way to go Don,, tell it like it is, we need more prominent people in this country speaking up and to quit hiding.

That’s perfect. I know if I posted this on my Facebook I’d have a handful of people Unfriend me (not that it matters but they are all 20-25 yr old females who constantly defend the rights of anyone to be “triggered”). So people in the 20-30 age group are also the problem.

I used to think DC was a wise old hockey veteran and Coaches Corner was a great segment. At some point about 20 years ago he turned into bad tempered old guy, who still had some valid points, but CC became more of an amusing side show with his rants. Recently he's become pretty out of touch, and calling out immigrants for not wearing poppies is yet another example. I suspect they jumped on this opportunity to fire him. He should have left on his own terms long ago. The younger hockey crowed will remember him not just as the grumpy old man on the second intermission (what's he ranting on about?), but the grump old bigoted man.

I've always found it rather ridiculous that Don Cherry, along with other sports and entertainment personalities, depart from talking about things about which they may know something (sports, entertainment) and spout off about things they are often singularly unqualified to comment on in a meaningful way. Don't get me wrong, they are free to do so, if their employer tolerates (or encourages) it, and they are free to do so as private citizens, just like the rest of us. But, with rare exceptions, Don Cherry and virtually all of the actors, entertainers, athletes and others who proffer opinions on politics, social or cultural issues, science, or anything outside of what got them in the public eye, are no more qualified to do so than virtually any member of the public. (You may as well pull random people off the street.) Yet because of their media profile, the viewing public listens to what they say on these issues. I don't and what Cherry has said here is the reason why.

Professional sport is more than a business nowadays. When NHL issued the statement on Saturday I knew the axe was dropping on him. Then read the statement from Budweiser today. NHL, Rogers and Budweiser don’t see this thru the leftie/rightie lense. Their multi billion dollars brand is the most critical asset for them and they just did their PR analysis and made the call.

He said what he believes, and appears to have always believed. At 7:36 of this video he says “I wish more Canadians were like me” in a related context; the interviewer asks him where such a view leads. Definitely worth watching even though it is from 30 years ago. Appalling then and appalling now.
