2016 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Fishing Reports

thanks for sharing Derby. Looks like a decent trip for you. Nice pic of that spring....I'm up for 6 days starting next Sunday. Fingers crossed my timing is right for the inside.....

I believe they got some rain up there so maybe that will draw them in if they are around..if not go out.. have a good one and rip some lips :)

Anyone been checking what's in the stomach of their Nootka fish??

Headed that way in a week. Excited for the 100K that will be showing up at the same time as us.

We split ours open the second they hit the deck. One was empty, the other was filled with a small baitfish I didn't recognize. was no more than two inches long with a dominant yellow eye. Someone mentioned shad. I googled the images for shad. Not quite, but has the same large eye. Smelt maybe? Not an expert on pelagic forage fish.

yes it rained hard on Saturday. Still drying out my gear

Hey Derby you sure those hally's are the over size ;) you might have to come aboard the Heavy Hauler one day :p

Yup. Our fish from inside same thing. Full of ~2" long brown bait fish, stickleback size and shape but not stickleback. Juvie rockfish maybe? Cougar creek dock had schools of them. If had more time could have tried to do something to match it, shortened brown needlefish hootchie perhaps?

Nate Got one of these American shad in the gill net 3 weeks ago and said he saw a pile of small ones...perhaps juvenile shad ?262_6294.JPG

gold star kingfisher.jpg Gold star kingfisher 675.jpg These are the spoons we had some good luck on matching those bait fish with in #3 size (2 5/8 in) They are actually silver horde not coyote. Captain Hooks carries all the good stuff, super nice gal running the place, check them out.

Derby those are the same baitfish we found in our offshore Nootka fish in mid-July.

I believe they are juvenile yellowtail or canary rockfish or juvenile pacific ocean perch (not dock perch, but rather the deep-water species). We used a green kinetic O'ki titan in the 4 inch size to imitate their silver-olive colour and did extremely well with fish up to 27 pounds. One day we were releasing multiple 20 pounders out there hoping for a Tyee for our last fish (didn't happen) and the schools of those little baitfish were 50 to 70 feet thick in places.

I've seen them get on that type of bait in the past up around Quatsino and found darker coloured hoochies like a UV army truck worked very well. I would imagine a squirt size would be even better.

On the west coast when I've run into the brown colour water your speaking of I've done extremely well using a gold 3" mini plankton hoochie at times. Those are hard to find these days, but you can sometimes find gold needlefish hoochies and cut them down. That may imitate the bait you are talking about fairly well. Not the exact shade of the bait, but the gold hoochies can work great in very brown water. Just a thought for guys who have a good selection of hoochies.

Other hoochie colours that work well in the dark water are pink, orange, and brown.
