TR-1 For Dummies

It was originally mounted below the water line about mid ships. We have tried calibrating many times and it fails after about 3 circles. I have the manual and followed the calibration instructions. Calm conditions. Tight circle 30 to 60 seconds. We moved the ball to a new location today and calibration still failed and it works the same. Drifts to right or left.
Beginning to think something is wrong with the control box or gyro.
When we rotate the ball by hand the motor instantly responds so it seems to be working.
Real puzzle.

anyone know if there is a factory reset? There is a factory compass and pilot reset. Have tried both of these.

Sir Reel....make sure it's not near any stereo speaker or magnetized device. Mine is mounted below the helm (in the storage area), about 2/3 up from the stern.

My pump is leaking. Anyone repaired one or had it apart? Shop drawing of pump? Help please

I finally found mine was leaking as right from new I could never get it to hold a course. 4 years later I pulled it out to sell it and was playing with it and discovered it was weeping. Contacted Garmin and they sent me another unit less the ecm for $260.00 usd plus a core charge of $260.00 usd on top. I took my ECM put it on the unit I got from them and sent mine back to them for the core refund. Nice thing is after 4 years it now seems to be working as it should.

MRWood, I don't think there are any magnetized devises or iron near the compass. It is mounted in the bilge centerline as far forward as the cable will allow. we took it out of its mount and sat it on a temporary mount in a different location in the companionway and it still would not calibrate. 3 circles and then it fails. I also loaded factory compass and it still drifts off to the left or right.

My unit is the TR1 Gold and about 10 years old. Does Garmin offer support on this product? Was yours the newer Garmin version?

Mine is a TR1 Gold about 4-5 years old. It looks the same as the units being currently sold.

Give them a call or send them an email. Emails seem to take a while to get answered so I would use the phone. They were pretty helpful.

My 2nd pump in 3 years is leaking. Checked out and ISO 32 & Dextron 3 are the same lubrication properties . AW32 is the same too. Anybody had experience with these in BC? Looking for a new pump or repair

I got an email reply back from Garmin on my problem. They doubt it is the compass and think it is interference still.
So will try some new locations.

Another thought is the wire that hangs down from the compass is used to connect to the chart plotter and in my case unused. It may have been sitting in bilge water. I wonder if it is corroded or wet? Looks like it is shrink wrapped but water could still get In. There was quite a bit of water in the bilge not long ago when I had hot water tank problem. Will cut wire and separate and re shrink. Fingers crossed.

I don't have the wire pluged in and it hangs down. I know that it needs to be as striaght up and down as possible

Steveston Marine just emailed. They will NOT honour there online pricing. Raised the cost to $708 on the pump, there shipped to you in 5 days on the website is not true. Or as a fisherman once said, that's ******** man!!!

ThistledewII that would be great. I have a couple more things to try from Garmin and if still not working right then having another compass ball would really help me determine the problem.
If mine is defective do you want to sell it?

Hi ThistledewII,

I tried some more trouble shooting to get the TR1 to work and no matter what I do it operates the same.
Will call you tonight if that's ok?
