Look at those beauties!! (the 2 dudes) hahahaha.

Looks like a good time sir!

I will be fishing Ukee from the 13th - 22nd and have a question. A buddy is bringing prawn traps and as I have never prawned before I have no idea where might be a good spot to set them. I assume 300 - 350 ledges in the Barclay sound might be good however if someone could share some productive spots it would sure help. No need to reveal any super secret honey holes just a general area would help.

Thanks in advance.

Can't say I have any experience doing this myself but I just contacted my friend who has done lots in that area. He said the depths you want to work are a bit shallower on the west coast, not like Nanaimo (where you want to go 300-350), he said try 180-250ft, maybe closer to 250 because it has been warmer lately. He mentioned a spot near the lighthouse, to the right of it. Said there's a hole there a lot of guys hit for prawns and Hali. If not there, up Barclay sound a bit, look for shelves (or other traps) around those same depths. Can't say these will work for sure but I trust my friends judgement.

Has anyone caught a fish on a 7"plug or something like a #8 wonder this year? Dragging the mud for small hali and feeders with needlefish squirts is okay, but kind of dull after a while. How is the chinook fishing inside Clayoquot if the big winds and 5 meter seas actually do come?

Bigwavedave says Long Beach 0-5 winds on Tuesday . The other one says 30-40.

Tubber,

Some local FN and others have been fishing with larger spoons and plugs for a while now, but more in the 6" sizes. Spoons and Plugs are selling through our shop a lot faster this week if that is any indication for you as well.
Regarding inside Clayoquot Chinook, there is some quality around mixed in with the teeners. One of our boats had a 27 and 29 yesterday close to town....lots o Coho....
Glad to help with more details if you want to stop by the shop.

Gale forecast for three days now and still not hitting us near shore, yet.

J.

ya. Odd weather I'd say. Forecast to blow hard. The south brooks buoy has been blowing around 30 knots for 3 days now and here, hardly a breeze. Hope this ends soon.

Thanks Jay. I'll be by on Monday afternoon to pick up some stuff and seek some help from you or your staff. My partner and his 75 year old back won't be able to take much pounding on a run outside.

I just read a report about slow Salmon fishing down off Ucluelet and wondering if that is out on the bank? Looked like limits of Chickens on board so assuming it was not tight to the beach...Buddy from Ucluelet stopped in to the shop yesterday and it didn't sound bad along the beach, Flo area etc.
We have some guests looking for a charter and we are jammed for their specific date so they thought they might try Ukee. Feedback Anyone?

Hey folks,
My boss put me out working in Tofino this week July 17-21 and I had very high hopes of bringing my boat and fishing all week after work. Unfortunately, my boat broke down and the shops are all backed up right now. Bring on another thousand, as they say. Anyways, if anyone is going out for an evening bite and has an extra spot I would gladly pay for the gas/bait. I'm off at 3:15 in downtown Tofino. I brought my rod and I'm going to pick up some gear from Jay's as I forgot my tackle box.

Yes, I am aware how desperate I sound but I was just really pumped to fish this week and am rather bummed by my boat breakdown.

Tight lines,
Smokin

Finally I have some time to post a report from our fishing trip to Ukee. We had an absolute blast and choosing Matt (Ironnoggin) as our guide really paid off. First morning out within 2-3 minutes of the gear hitting the water we were into fish and that pace didn't really stop until we were limited out on Springs for four guys. Nothing big but delicious BBQ sized fish from 10-12lbs. There was enough Coho by-catch just trying to get the gear down through them and didn't really want to bleed a bunch out while we picked through to find the hatchery fish. Constantly popping the clips on the downriggers on the way down they were a really fun "nuisance" to have! Have heard that there were some smaller fish but all but a couple of the hoes we were into were absolutely beautiful fish in the 8-10lb range. Also the Halibut seemed to love our gear as well as we got out limit the first day and three the second day just trolling above the mud biggest being a fat 40lber. The boys I brought out are not experienced rods and Matt was a consummate profesional walking them through how play the fish using his Islander knuckle busters. They had an absolute hoot as my two brothers had only had really limited success fishing ECVI in the Comox area and the other had never fished the ocean before. No pukers on board either which was a bonus and they kept saying it was going to blow and it never really materialized. Day two the action was not quite as fast and furious but Matt's knowledge really paid off and we still had steady action for most of the day. We already have a plan for next year, can't effing wait!
