CJ Special Spoon

there are a few members on here testing them out with excellent results, some exclusively fishing them.
they do have a real nice action to them, I have a couple I'm saving for the big guys this summer.
should be a hoot. they do seem well thought out and should last a lifetime

Caught any on them yet Gidyup?

nope I cant attest to that yet, the ones I have were given to me a couple months ago and are the larger ones
so I havent bothered to try them on winters yet, there is a member over on Galiano I think he said he's from and thats all he uses with great success
I'm sure he'll chime in sooner or later

Want to get a couple of these fir my tackle box. Not looking for freebies. How do I get hold of Charlie?

I have a couple and have been using one off and on for winters and have been catching fish with it. Just haven't had consistent fishing to say it is better than what I normally would use, but everything has it's day. Worth putting out there for sure.

I have fished the CJ's four times now in the Vancouver area and also fished spoons (TKO, Kingfisher and Coyote) each time ... Spoons have definitely out fished the CJ's so far but the CJ's have sure looked fishy in the water.

I bought a small plastic bag of various sizes and colors from Charlie one day in a coffee shop in Duncan. I took them to Renfrew, and one day when spring fishing was slow I went to the can buoy and just started trawling out to deeper water. I was alone in my boat, and was so busy dealing with fish. It is a memory I will keep forever. The tackle I bought had a small hole to feed line through at each end, no ring as in the picture. He had advise on color selection based on the sun. If it was bright I was to use one color scheme, and if it was cloudy a different color scheme.

Mark me down as a strong supporter.

To the person who asked how do I contact Charlie, he lives in Duncan, on Bell McKinnon Road. Check the phone book for more info.

Yup I'm on Galiano and was lucky to meet charlie 3 years ago by stumbling upon his lures for sale at the coffee shop by the boat launch in crofton. I got his number and called him for some more after catching a few fish on the first lure I bought. I quickly became friends with Charlie as he is like a third grandfather and is a wealth of information and stories of fishing. He's a legend in my books and has been catching fish on his own homemade lures since the 70's. His design has been evolving every batch he does (usually 50-100 lures at a time now) He has patents on his design and has recently ironed out a production contract so hopefully everyone will be able to buy them by this summer. Charlie always told me to get photos of his lures with a nice fish and he would give me a free lure. That arrangement quickly turned into me fishing them exclusively last season (fished almost everyday), and having an epic year for the gulf islands. I have dozens upon dozens of photos documenting my trials fishing and testing them. Most of the pics off of that website are my photos that I contributed on Charlies behalf. Since then Charlie has been busy in his workshop coming up with new ideas, colour patterns, glow, and new finishes. I now have well over 100 different sizes and colours of the original hand made CJ's and have been catching lots of great winters right off of Galiano using the 3,3.5,and 4 inch greens, purples, and the new glow in the darks. Took a 20lb winter on december 16th on a new glow 3 inch. Usually 5-10ft off the bottom in 100ft, but somedays 15-20ft. or 100-180ft down out in deeper water(150-250) I cant wait to use the 5 inch this may when I absolutely slayed them last year starting in May at Porlier. I named one of the lures "the Porlier Pilchard" (5inch blue back yellow belly silver sides with black spots) As a joke as its not known to be a local type of baitfish but that lure took fish after fish after fish starting May at Porlier fished 120ft on the rigger out in the 180-250's. One of my other favourites is also one of Charlies favourites is the 3.5-4inch purple back white belly with silver sides which I named the purple destroyer. Been an absolute killer on the winters especially trailed 6ft behind a "purple onion" or standard green glow or purple glow. Some of these lures have been retired and put into the china cabinet as keepsakes after catching dozens of fish. Even though they eventually became chipped and chewed up by fish they still kept catching fish after fish. One thing to remember with these lures is trolling speed...If your going too slow they wont be rolling and swapping directions like they should be. Best speed for me has been 2.2-3.5 mph on the Gps.

I'm with you 44....the lures are a cross between a plug and a spoon at the proper speed. A " splug" ?? You should see how well the new trout 2 inch pattern works...4... 2 to 3 lb. from Quamichan Lake in 2 hours on one rod vs the top producing stickleback plug on the other. The needlefish pattern worked well for me at Renfrew last year, and the new 5 inch needle fish pattern will be even better I think. Pacific Net and Twine are going to produce and market them, check with Robert there for availability.

A good day @ Porlier May 24/2011. The fish were hitting CJ's all day long. We caught our limit and released about a dozen fish that day. It was my first day trying out the 5 inch pilchard fresh off the press, and that was the day it got the name "The Porlier Pilchard"

I fished three of these lures on Saturday off French Creek for 4 hours....6ft behind a flasher on 40lb test.

Fished from 50ft to 230ft.

Trolled 'em at 2.9 to 3.5 mph........

Nada....not a sniff.

But then again...if there's no fish around, they won't catch anything.

I would slow it down once in awhile too bounce between 2-3.5mph depending on whether your going with or against the tide...Big tides are no good for me on "the outside"

what size were you using Seafever?

I was using the 4" in and I also used a smaller one.
The 4" inch were the color that was supposed to be good for winters that you were using.

I read to fish them fast.....so I was reluctant to slow them down to "normal".

But fishing them fast I had a ton of "blowback"......like the water was 180ft deep and I had 220ft of line out and I still wasn't scratching bottom.

Went with the tide, across, and also against it.

Next time will try slower.

Have fished the CJ now for 2 years and found that speed is critical( 2.8 to 3,8 mph on the GPS) and favour the 3 1/2 in and 4 in green, gold and silver either side , dance 'em behind 44 to 56in of leader , flasher or no flasher , found best action across the tide run.
Hit springs , coho , pinks and chums with it.
Got Charlie to make me ones with a hot pink back and it killed the coho.
