Dude...you can swim right along side those things while diving or snorkelling. They're no great white or tiger shark.

You are very welcome Bluesea. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the derby. Look up six gill sharks on the web. Divers swim with them when they get a chance. These sharks usually stay at depths of 2000 feet +. They come to shallow waters to feed at night and are not agressive like other species of shark. They are not thick in numbers out there and the chance of seeing one while out fishing is very very very scarce.

We went shopping for more fishing gears getting ready for the derby, It had been awhile fishing since I fish out Bamfield area, what most typical active lures are being use right now in that area?...

King_Cod, how is fishing up your way (Campbell River) ?.... French Creek fishing is sooooooooo Slowwwwwwww, Partner and I are thinking making a trip up sometime next week....

I haven't been out lately. Weather and home renovations have kept me off the water for a couple of weeks. I have heard things in CR have slowed down over the past few weeks.

Reports may be hard to pry right now as Bod stated ,
mostly due to not alot of pressure right now , which is good !
don't get discouraged , trust me , the fish are there to be had , they always are , you need to move around , right place , right time will win ya the Derby !
tides are not that important , weather is , when it's calm , get out there , Iv'e hit them in the middle of the day , middle of the tide...

popular spots ,Kirby ,Whittlestone to Brady , Whistebuoy , Sarita ,Vernon , Diplock , East Broken Group , are all fairly reliable
im sure thers more , im a bit of a rooky compared ta most of you in the area , but slowly catchin on , I mostly fish the inner Sound ,

advice ! just cause there are 3 or 5 or whatever amount of boats hammering a specific spot , DON'T assume that this is where ya shoulb be , move arround !! if needed, most fish will be in 100 - 200 feet of water , ur gear should be within 10 -20 feet of the bottom , most of my fish are hit between 100- 125 on the counter , if ur not seeing much bait , dont waste too much time , get outta there , move to another area

SMALL Spoons are money in the bank ,Greens- Blacks..... but ,more about locating the fish ,there not that picky !
rubber n chovy's can light up too....bring it all...

hope this helps a little BlueSea , you will have a blast, Don`t Worry... most are worried about having enough beer in the boat than getting back to the scale ..

Cabins at Mills Landing are all gone now.

Imperial Eagle has one left.

Can't wait for this HORRIBLE storm to pass so I can get out there and do some recon...

While I'm out there for the derby I would like to fish for some Halibut. I really hope there is no delay on the season opening! Anyone have any tips for fishing on the inside for them? My boat is no Grady and I can't travel very far offshore :(

Bring your stuff, don't need to go to far should we be allowed to do it!

Read the forum is making me looking forward for the derby and to meet a bunch of nice guys, thank you Fog for the info. winning the derby is nice but catching the fish is much nicer.... I think we do have enough lures in the tackle box, maybe will buy more pink and white hoochies caught most fish yet during last summer for me in French Creek area...

we will see you all out there, keep your eyes out for a 24' blue alum. jet boat... (Thomas would be the tall big guy and Tom is the small guy (that is me))

Booked into Imperial Eagle for this event. Big thanks to Jerry of Mills Landing for helping me get it. I won't be running far unless weather is great. But if you see my 16ft blue princecraft center console tinny, swing by and say howdy. Derby or not, I'll always share info if I'm into fish. Usually monitor 68 in this area, unless we all come up with an unofficially official channel to monitor for this event :)

Also just called Gone Fishin in Nanaimo and they are selling tickets for anyone down this way.

I know winter springs are usually caught trolling down deep but has anyone tried fishing shallow for them? where it is only 40-60 feet deep?

Typically , winter feeders rise to the top 40 feet around the first weekend of March in Barkley ,
especially during the " Sproat Lake Loggers Derby " don't give up , the bite will eventually turn on , be persistant , one rod at 22ft , the other at 32 ft can be killer...............

: ) : ) : )

Disappointing news today about the Halibut allocation, but at least the announcement for the opening has been made. Getting the Hali gear ready for the derby :)

McKay Bay Lodge will be open for fuel from 12-5 on Friday, Saturday and from 1-3 on Sunday.

One cabin left at Imperial Eagle, and a couple of rooms available down at McKay Bay.

Traceys B&B on the east side of town also.

Yea Flix, we'll drag some gear, make the ol' lady cook for us...

See ya Fri.

Oh ya and Gary - I don't ever fish up that high, but an old fella in town here doesn't fish much lower than that

And you should see the hoochie he drags! But gets a few fish nonetheless...

Just finalizing plans for the derby, really looking forward to it. We may come down a day early and was thinking of trying for Halis. Without giving out your secrets (unless you want to!), I would appreciate some advice on location and method, trolling/jigs/spreader bars etc. I have fished the banks before but was thinking of something closer in. Sorry for the dumbass rookie question...

Bet cha most of ya have never seen the Bamfield 500 like this before , OMFG !!!

Soiled myself around the 30 k mark 12 - 16 inches some areas
