Salmon took my Islander reel

NOOTKA BOUND

Hey everyone. I have a bit of a horror story for you. I just got back from taking my dad out to esperanza inlet for my uncles memorial trip (he passed with cancer last year) anyways my girlfriend just bought me a brand new blue islander mr2la reel, obviously saving for a while as i wanted one so bad but never could come up with the extra coin. We got a double header so as always i put my rod in the rod holder and net my dads fish. Well as i ran over to my rod it broke the rod holder and the salmon took my brand new rod and reel to the bottom. To make it worse it was the first connected bite with this new setup. I just wanted to inform you guys incase your fishing in the esperanza inlet/nootka island area and come across it on your lines. It would mean the world to me if found (I knows its next to impossible) this photo was the last time i set eyes on her.

Man that sucks for so many reasons. Good luck and I hope you get it back...

That sucks man, big time. You never know it may turn up, would be cool to read about it showing up that’s for sure.

I fish Esperanza from May to October so I'll look for it. Roughly where did it happen?

I’ve got a new fish-on rod holder that came in a box of boat stuff that also seems pretty weak to me. Anybody have an opinion?

You have to watch that these don’t loosen up on you and roll over. I have had these for years (after a few Scotty breakages) but every year I have to tighten up the set screws just a touch.
Yup, they must be checked frequently and I am going to put on a rubber sleeve to reduce slippage.

I replaced the boom mount Scotty rod holders with boom mounted super heavy duty all stainless rod holders and thats where the Islanders and Sage/Loomis rods go. If you are going to stick with Scotty gunnel/transom mounted rod holders, get a later generation Striker model with the stainless pin in them as they are the strongest that Scotty makes and I have not heard of them failing. Sorry to hear of your loss, that sucks.

Sorry about your Islander....I hang around Esperanza all summer...Where did you lose it? I've had 2 Scotty rod holders fail....both at the stem. They were older and were in the sun too long. One I grabbed and the other came back very gingerly on the release clip. I changed over to the Striker models. They have the same type of stem so I rigged 2 home made shock cords that go around the stainless arms and hook under the gunnel. These take stress off the striker and would hold it if it broke.....

The stem on the Stikers may look similar to their other rod holder stems but for all of the Strikers, other than the very eary generation there is a heavy stainless rod inserted in the stem and I have never heard of those breaking. Running a saftey tether on the holders does sound like a good idea. I know some tether their Halibut reels to the boat for gear protection on a monster size Halibut.

Something else is to set the drag so it plays out under heavy pull in the situation you were in and place the reel in the holders in such a way that the reel or its handles do not bind on the holder and lock up the reel putting max force on the holder when a big salmon is pulling on it.

I lost a prize fly rod and reel at Barbe lake in Manitoba a few years ago. I was rowing between spots dragging a fly. I had the rod in a Scotty rod holder. I saw a fish hit, saw the fish jump, went to pick it up pulling the rod out of the rod holder. No fault of the rod holder, I guess I wasn't holding it well enough - yank, out of my hand and gone. It was sad, as it was a pack rod my partner had given me for xmas. I tried trolling around to possibly hook it, but I only had flyrods and did not get lucky.

That is a tragedy. I’ve had my Islander/loomins go over the side of the boat due to the original orca holders opening up. In my opinion I would think these people having their boom mounts breaking off your drag must be very tight or the plastic is very old and brittle. Loosen that drag off especially when your leaving it with a fish on! Hopefully it pops up! Stranger things have happened!
