If you were buying electronics today...

P66 as a good source for a std transducer but if i was buying new the new TM-165 high wide would be the best for salmon and just run a P66 for bottom on 50 Htz

The P66 is a 40 degree beam at 50Khz, correct? Since the TM 165 HW is 30 degrees, how would the P66 differ that much for bottom as the TM 165 HW is good to 500 feet? Just asking; never owned either of these.

given the option would put both on a p66 & hw covered for all bases but if the mfd the OP gets comes with a 3-1 then adding a hw-165 will give a good picture for most waters and conditions without breaking the bank....... with 1K jobbies the recommended is a HW and a medium.

So for clarity. Is the only diff between the 165 and the 175 ones transom mount and the other thru hull?

No. In this particular case the 165 is a 600 watt transducer while the 175 is a 1,000 watt transducer.

Here is the link to the product page for Airmar CHIRP transducers:

https://www.airmar.com/productinfo.html?category=CT&name=CHIRP-Ready Transducers

The HW (high wide) transducers are quite new & there are some "gaps" in availability; there is no 600 watt HW thru-hull transducer

In general TM stands for Transom mount, B stands for Bronze, SS for stainless steel, P for plastic, PM for pocket mount. Most trailerable boats use a TM which will not interfere with the trailer when getting the boat off/on.

In the past, a high frequency transducer had a fairly narrow beam angle. Recent developments have resulted in a high frequency transducer with a wide beam angle; hence the HW suffix on these transducers, and these HW transducers are not broadly available across Airmar's product line.

Thanks for that. I'm looking at a new Garmin FF/GPS and plan to get the TM165HW. Not sure I've got the stomach yet to do a thru hull...

Besides there is no 600 watt version of a thru-hull HW CHIRP. Be sure to check the airmar site as they mention the TM165HW is not compatible across the whole Garmin line; checking with Garmin would be best. Yeah, the hole in the bottom is probably like parachuting; first time is the hardest.

I think what works for you may not work for me so to speak. Lots of my friends swear by Garmin but I had 1 system and I didn't find it as intuitive as they did . Doesn't mean anyone is better than the other. F vs C vs D. 100 opinions 100 people.
Biggest thing is does it work for you!!

Interesting that you say what you would buy today so this is what
I did buy new electronics today. After a lot of evaluation and reflection I decided to go with

So well my old stuff still works very well I am moving on and will probably put the old stuff up for sale to someone starting out that can't afford to blow 15K
I'd suggest upgrading to a chirp transducer. The TM150M is the chirp eqivelant of the p66..

Well I ordered a new Garmin 942 xs plus and the Airmar TM165HW with mix/match cable. The ducer was confirmed as compatible with the 942. I’ll install in May when I get boat in water. Hope Chirp is all I hear it is compared to the old p66

Please get back to us after you've tried it.I'm very interested to see how well that transducer works. Thanks
No shortage of youtube video's showing comparisons of CHIRP/non-CHIRP on F/F screens.

Otherwise, you can see what wikipedia has to say about CHIRP, Chirp compression & Chirp pattern matching. If you fully understand all this & can explain it to an idiot like me, please get back to me. In the meantime I'll continue to stay with CHIRP based on my limited real-world experiences.

PNT has some unbelievable boat show prices right now on electronics....... $5500 nss12 evo3s and halo+ radar was a no brainer for me......Also great deals on HDS Lives...... cheaper then HC

The HDS units from PNT do not include transducers either. The hds12 live from HC came with a transducer for less than the price of the one without at either stores.

So you got the hds12 with the 3 in 1 for less then $2999 ?

I dunno where you’re seeing that price. I can’t find it anywhere
You said you paid less for one with the transducer , then the ones that don’t come with transducers. So there $2999 without transducers so going by what you said you paid less then that, and it came with the transducer.
