Yamaha T9.9 Oil Filter Inspection

I am doing 100 hour servicing on a 2020 Yamaha T9.9. I am wondering if anyone has done an self inspection and cleaning of of the engine oil filter/screen (built into the oil pan) that the owners manual calls for. I am thinking it's probably not an easy job. I am also wondering how to get grease into the two small holes on the front of the tilt tube because there are no zerks on the tilt tube. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, if the screen is this one https://www.boats.net/product/yamaha/68T-13421-01-00?ref=da8158cd1d047d5042c7df1ddf68ecb3e4042df0 my inspection would be to look for metalic particles in the oil I just drained out into a very clean pan. After saying that you can expect a little scheen on the first oil you drain out, but not on subsequent ones. you might even run the hot oil through a coffee filter

To grease the tilt tube you might find this works https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/grease-gun-needle-tip-adapter-0282767p.html

Thanks for the reply gungadin. From what I've been able to determine the oil screen is very hard to inspect and the Yamaha dealer does not do it as part of the 100 hour service. Running the oil through a coffee filter is not a bad idea and I'll give the grease fitting a try.

You can't inspect that filter without performing a ridiculous amount of work. I've got the Seloc manual and they talk about the procedure in it and even say how impractical it is to perform the service.
As for greasing the tilt tube you either hold the grease gun/tube hard up against the lube points or you can buy a zerc fitting and thread it in and use those to grease these points.
That's the way I grease my 2010 yamaha 9.9 ht.
The zerc fittings weren't a common size and thread I seem to recall.

Yeah weird there isn't an external filter on the Yamaha but these things are everywhere and run up to 5,000 + hours so my plan is to change the oil on the regular and if it blows its brains out, fix it or replace. I would definitely end up with parts left over if I attempted to pull that oil screen out...

Yes, apparently it is necessary to remove the powerhead

I've pulled more than one t8 apart to that level and I can assure you that you do not want to undertake such an endeavor especially on a new motor. I've seen a few of those filters and they are never needing any kind of servicing even on old high hour units.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I am definitely not going to go looking for the oil filter but I can't help wondering why Yamaha would include this inspection requirement in the Owners manual maintenance chart 1.

They knew they built a product that was too reliable and long lived so they had to provide some service opportunities for their dealers!
