Parks Canada undertook broad and extensive consultations with local residents, stakeholders and Canadians to hear their views on the proposed boundary for the proposed national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen and key aspects for consideration in its management.
Parks Canada is very grateful to the wide range of people and organizations, from the South Okanagan-Similkameen region, British Columbia and around Canada, who took the time to share their feedback. This valuable input will be taken into consideration in the assessment of the establishment of the national park reserve and the negotiations of an establishment agreement, should the proposal proceed.

In support of its commitment to openness and transparency, Parks Canada is sharing a summary of the results of the public consultations through a “What We Heard” report, which was developed by a third-party consultant.
First Nations partners are holding self-led community engagement as a separate process with members of their Indigenous communities to determine support within the Okanagan Nation Alliance.
Through the public consultations, participants recognized conservation and the protection of the area’s sensitive rare ecosystems as the main attributes of the South Okanagan-Similkameen area, followed by recognition of its special recreational opportunities.
There are, of course, a diversity of views to consider and Parks Canada and its partners will carefully look at the opportunities and challenges the proposed national park reserve presents. Every national park and national park reserve is unique and Parks Canada is committed to working with its partners, stakeholders and local residents to find solutions to address concerns raised through the public consultations, while respecting Parks Canada’s mandate.
The goal is to confirm a final boundary for the proposed national park reserve by summer 2019. Afterwards, steps would be undertaken to negotiate the necessary agreements that set the terms and conditions for the formal establishment of a national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen.
