Mama, Wolf, anyone heard of how things have been as of late? Thanx in advance.-dirty

Whirl bay has been good but lot of little ones same with the bluffs but lots of action. You know how winters can be small ones one day bigger the next. Do know for a fact buddy of mine got a 21 lber on weds. near pedder.

Good Luck Wolf!!!

Not Pedder but caught three in Beacher Bay yesterday but only smallish in size, largest at 8lbs. There wasn't a lot of action on the four other boats that I saw there. Looks like a little hit and miss right now.

I.O. report from Feb. 7.

Pedder Bay
The salmon fishing was GOOD BUT SLOWER this past week. Anglers were catching salmon in all areas from William Head to Church Rock. Whirl Bay was good for salmon from 6 to 8 lbs, and Pedder Bay produced bigger springs weighing to 12lbs. Start fishing in 120 to 150 feet of water and troll close to the bottom and you’ll get some fish. Overall, the Green and Glow color patterns have been the best for lures. The Glo and Glo Scale were the best teaser heads to use in combination with glow in the dark flashers. If you want to troll spoons, use Green/Glow or Cop Car Coyotes or Titans. Hootchies and squirts have been good with the Cricket, Glow Head and Purple Haze being “hot” ones. Purple Haze and Jellyfish Plaid flashers were especially good in combination with any of the Jellyfish patterns. Like Sooke, you can fish just about anything now can still catch fish. HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was opened and the tides look good for this coming week. Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight is the best bet to catch the big flatfish although some anglers have been doing well on jigs such as the Mudraker or Lucky Jig.

Actually......

Two of the three that I caught on Monday were on a plaid jellyfish flasher. The pattern reflects the light very well and the fish really seem to like them on the right days.

Who knows though, could just be luck ;)

I love how these stores will promote the latest and greatest new lure colors that the fish cant resist. Plain and simple its designed to hook the fisherman more than the fish. For the most part if you fished one lure all most of the time you will catch most of your fish on it. Now if everybody bought the purple polka dot gleen lined flash reflective tape hooly popper spoon on sale, and everybody then fished it, it would then be the hot lure of the month.

Gotta love retail!!!

actually at port alberni/barkley sound the jellyfish/purple haze flashers and hootchies were nearly as good as choves on cloudy days for me(better then choves for coho actually) so I dont think it is quite all b.s. although there certainley is a lot of that going on in retail.

I have to agree with eagle eyes this is not a trend these flashers and teaser heads catch fish!!! Part of the reason is they attract ultra violet light and amplify it. This means even at deeper depths the colour is not lost and still stands out. I also love the plaid flashers and two of my biggest fish were caught on the cop car roto chip flasher this past season. I still think right place, right time, right roll or gear and you will catch fish. But some of the biggest fish have been caught on unusaul or different set-ups or odd leader lengths or distance from the boat. I know alot of people that sware by these new flasher and teaser heads and they are not weekend warriors like I am !!! Why do people spend up to $300.00 for a lucky louie plug ??? All I can say is old habits never die and many people are not willing to try new things. I have to agree with one thing I did read, I believe alot of gear shows up in tackle stores unproven
and many anglers pick it because it looks good. Who was to think a 3.5" orange and black coyote spoon new for 2004 was going to slaughter sockeye. Out fished everything else on my boat 5 to one and I have every shade of hootchie and squirt you can buy. I borrowed mine from a guide as you couldn't find one on Vancouver Island if your life depended on it. Yet a guy with two 2 ot black hooks tied in tandem was also out fishing many boats for sockeye ??? Just goes to show you if you don't try you won't know. However if you are guiding you are going to run stuff that works time and time again you are less willing to take a risk in trying something new. Remember sometime change is good other times not so good.... Only you can make that choice.

Just an opinion. Cheers My Escape

Happy Hookin!!!

oh and by the way the jellyfish flashers slaughtered the chums too, although in fairness people were catching chums on a lot of different gear.

Well said Momma!!! There is a flasher called Protroll with alleged e-chip technology. Said to outfish traditional flashers by up to 400%. It is 8 or 11 inches long and looks just like a traditional hot spot, the only difference is that it has a small stainless stell tube built into the tail end which contains a small ball bearing, at one end of the tube is a ceramic crystal, as the ball strikes the crystal it produces an electrical impulse duplicating the nerve discharge of a wounded baitfish! Some say it does work. But is this just another one of those shiny new gagets that will replace the traditinal hotspots? I have got all sorts of u.v, glow, plaid, even was sucked into a new swirl pattern lately. But as the fitters rerport comes out and the retail is piled up all of the sudden theres a new hot lure that we all must have to fullfill our addiction......All i am saying is i am running out of room to hang flashers, and there are now even floating flashers that disconnect when a fish runs with it coming out.A guide out of Campbell river developed this. When will it end? Besides how can you beat whole herring crammed into a teaser of Whittlstone or Otter or wherever with no flasher....

Bottom line is, using Sooke for example, if you asked 10 "highliners" what their favorite flasher/bait head colour combo would be I guarantee everyone would be different...that tells the story right there.

The age old discussion on lure sizes and colors... when will it ever end. My point is that yes this new flasher might have caught lots and big fish while people used it, but that is not to say that the same salmon wouldn't have taken a green hot spot with a choe instead of. Nobody has the true answer here but after many moons guiding the northern coast (and ya I know those fish are different from the Sooke ones) I have come to the conclussion that people give fish way to much credit.

<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>Yo Mamma I think you nailed it on the head. Look how many lures plugs etc that always produced well that have gone by the way side due to the fact there not made any more or have been replaced by the new flashy replacement flasher, plug, lure, etc that still produces great returns, but truly compared to what??? There's to many factors involved to list. However now to play devils advict, how long ago would have it been that people wouldn't have believed you if you said that a simple blast of a lazer on there eyes would allow them to throw there glasses away. So mabye these new echips, colours, flashers, plugs, ect might have some merrit. The problem is do you know what a fish really thinks. That is the mystery of fishing!!! The day someone figures it all out thats the day it stops being a sport.

Cheers MyEscape Just an opinion !

ps sorry for continuing to hijack this thread.

Happy Hookin!!!

I have to admit certain flashers do work better for me but ill tell another guide what I am using or he will tell me what he is using and we switch he still doesnt catch any or when I switched I didnt catch any either so what is it? personally I think it is how you present the bait with the combination of a certain colour of flasher.

If you remember Rob Waters report as soon as he said a certain colour combo worked every one went to it with some success but in saying that if 100 boats out of 120 fished it of course it will out fish the others because every one is using it.

It also depends on how confident you think about the gear and your abilities dont ask me why or how to explain it but sometimes you just "know" its going to be a good day or not, as some as you sooke fisherman know youll pull into the trap look in and see no bait and nobody playing a fish and you know youll be in for a long day sometimes.

Good Luck Wolf
