What's your MPG?

Just topped the boat off with 500 Litres of fuel. Finally did a rough calculation of my MPG and came up with about 1.5. Is that any good? I wasn't accounting for the back and forth from the fishing grounds and the moving about. I think it was a trip to Deep Cove, a trip to Gambier and my entire trip to Egmont. That was running 28MPH the whole time with a 15000lb boat. I'm actually not sure I was filled it right up when I last got fuel. I'm trying to be super conservative here.

24ft Seaport. 300 etec. I'd say 6500lbs loaded including 2 of us. Cruise at 30mph burning
12gal an hr getting 2.3 mpg according to gauges and not too choppy out.

Great thread. One thing to watch out for -- guages in gallons may be showing those tiny US gallons [it takes 1.2 US gallons to make an imperial gallon]. Pacific Yachting's mpg figures are in US units - so multiply them by 1.2.

So my 23 Hourston with D3-200 hp Volvo duoprop diesel weighs about 6500 lbs wet. At 3300 rpm, I cruise at 27 mph, and burn 7 US gallons per hour [5.8 Imperial gallons]. If I'm doing my arithmetic right, I get 27/5.8 = 4.6 mpg [imperial] or 3.9 in US units.

I love diesel. My old V8 gas engine burned at least 50% more.

That does not sound right Jon. I get 2.35 mpg and yours should be better as those 41’s are very fuel efficient. I Just spent 7 days in the gulf islands and came back with just under half a tank.

Maybe I'll have to do this for real now. I rarely fill right up to the vents so now is a good time to try it again.

1.5 is amazing for a 30' multi bedroom cruiser at cruising speed.

Remember - you are bringing your house with you....

For reference; Grady 282 w/ Yam 225s... cruise 1.5 mpg... Verado 300s 1.4-1.5 mpgs

Whaler 315 with Verado 300s at cruise 1.0-1.1 mpg

Whaler 315 with Verado 350s 1.4-1.5 mpg

Eaglecraft 34 w/ single D6-400 1.7 mpg @ cruise 30mph

Tiara 4200 Open w/ twin QSM11, 26 mph cruise, 30 GPH for a 0.8mpg

American Tug single cummins 405hp QSL9.... 8 knots, 4 GPH. 10 knots, 10 GPH, 12 knots 20gph...

Speed, reliability, or cheap. Pick two.

I don't know why I don't just message you directly with this stuff lol. Thanks man.

I have the same boat as RC but with newer Volvo D4’s. I bet mine weighs at least a 1000 pounds more than his due to heavier diesels and dinghy and motor on the back .
2.35mpg.

I have a simple boat with no gauges.
The last day of my last trip was 3 hours trolling, 2 hours running ave 21 mph, 30 minutes at 6mph in Ukee harbour. 48 statute miles. 34 litres to fill up.
5.33 miles/US gallon
6.4 miles/Imp gallon
~4US GPH

This is kind of tricky one, inside water and west coast water makes a big difference, tides and all, but my 25 with Honda 225 cruise at 28mph at 4400Rpm I get 2 mpg on avg depending on swells, now if I go up to 4800rpm I get about 1 mpg, boat is about 6500lbs with my fat butt in it.going offshore I burn 1/3 more fuel then coming back, as I surf all the way back

Weighing in at 5800 lbs, the Yamaha F300xca best cruise is at 3400-3500 rpm, 27-29 mph, 2.8-3.0 mpg, 9.6-9.8 gph in ideal conditions with trim way up. Pushing the bow down a bit more in chop reduces efficiency by 5-10%

24’ Pursuit with twin 150 Yamaha’s.. Flat calm I can squeeze 2.6 MPG cruising at 28mph/3400 rpm. If it’s rough or choppy I still run around 28mph but the mileage drops to around 2.3 MPG.

26 foot SEasport Kodiak; twin DF200’s.... man, I’d kill for some of the MPG numbers I’m seeing above. The guy who sold me the boat claimed 2.3 MPG....I have NEVER seen that. I’m happy if I get 1.8 MPG—- running 3,500 RPM , 15 knts. I think the biggest drag on my numbers is the fuel tank— 680 liters!

I have yet to run the boat with 1/4 a tank of gas—-I’m guesing I might be able to get to 2.0 MPG with less weight

18’ hourston 2019 Suzukidf150 26mph@4000rpm 4.1mpg in ideal conditions loaded for a day fishing unsure of weight.

I think your speed is killing your MPG. I have the same engines and a 26' boat with 10'2" beam and in flat calm conditions at 28mph, 4250 rpm I'm seeing 2.2-2.3MPG

I have had a lot a discussions with my buddies on fuel mileage. Most people tell you their fuel numbers the same as they tell you the weight of their fish. You need to divide what people tell you by Cooks Constant 1.3.

Do you have a fuel flow meter? If you do you can create a chart with RPM every 100 and then the speed and fuel burn at that rpm. Then you can see where your sweet spot is. I can cruise from 25mph to 35mph and can be within 10% of my best mpg at 30mph.
Where you really lose mileage is when you have to slow down going into weather and not quite on plane
I had a 26 Seaport Navigator and 41 series diesel. Cruise was 22knots burning 5gph. It was pretty amazing. But top speed was just over 27 knots
