Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0387-RECREATIONAL- Salmon - Fraser River Spring Chinook - Areas 18, 19, 20 and 29 - Recreational Fishery Management Actions

Further to FN0092 and FN0352, the Department has been in consultations with
representatives of the Sport Fishing Advisory Board to develop additional
management measures to protect Fraser River Spring Chinook populations as they
pass through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Fraser River during June and
early July. Details of these measures are outlined below.

2. Subareas 19-1 to 19-4, 20-5 and a portion of 20-4 from a point at the mouth
of Jordan River located at 48.25.382N/124.03.410W then true south to the point
of intersection with the international boundary between Canada and the United
States.

Effective 00:01 hours June 3, 2010 until 23:59 hours June 18, 2010 the daily
limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day which may be wild or hatchery marked
between 45 cm and 67 cm or hatchery marked only chinook over 67 cm in length.

Then,

Effective 00:01 hours June 19, 2010 until 23:59 hours July 15, 2010 the daily
limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be
greater than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 45cm.

2. Subareas 18-1 to 18-6, 18-9, 18-11, 19-5 and a portion of 29-4, and 29-5
that lies south from a point on the east side of Valdes Island located at
49.05.562N/123.39.989W then extending 57 degrees True for 5 nautical miles to a
point at 49.08.316N/123.33.669W.

Effective 00:01 hours June 3, 2010 until 23:59 hours July 15, 2010 the daily
limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be
greater than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 62cm.

So they extended the slot limit again. BUT now it's from Jordan River to Cadboro Point. NO wild chinook salmon bigger than 67cm until June19th.

Then from June 19th to July15th we can keep 2 chinook but only 1 can be greater than 67cm! I assume they can be wild or hatchery although they didn't specify.

Interesting that the JDF derby starts on June19th so they may have affected DFO's decision somehow.

this does get more and more confusing. We WERE going to come up to Sooke and fish a few days, had a rental lined up, got sorta shut down by the slot limit, tho it sounds like some ok fish are being caught. So switched gears and now are planning to go up to Sidney end of this week to fish a few days. I guess we can still catch one nice king a day north of Caldoboro, so still worth the trip, especially if we can get some prawns in Saanich.

jeeze, non of us are lawyers but it would probably help. we have one fish biologist, one marine supplier, an entrepreneur and one in real estate, and it still is hard to follow...............:D

THANK GOD! At least we get the chance to weigh in a big one in the derby now! Wish had a few extra tickets tho incase more then @ slabs are caught ea day!
