Subject: FN0485-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Reminder of Fraser River Spring Chinook-Areas 18, 19, 20 and 29 - Recreational Fishery Management Actions

A reminder to recreational harvesters of the following measures the Department
will be implementing a “chinook corridor” containing additional management
measures to protect Fraser River Spring and Summer Chinook populations as they
pass through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Fraser River during June and
early July. Details of these measures are outlined below.

1. Subareas 19-1 to 19-4, and 20-5.

Effective 00:01 hours June 18, 2011 until 23:59 hours July 15, 2011 the daily
limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be
greater than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 45cm.

2. Subareas 18-1 to 18-6, 18-9, 18-11, 19-5, 19-6 and a portion of 29-4, and 29-
5 that lies south from a point on the east side of Valdes Island located at
49.05.562N/123.39.989W then extending 57 degrees True for 5 nautical miles to a
point at 49.08.316N/123.33.669W.

Effective 00:01 hours May 05, 2011 until 23:59 hours July 15, 2011 the daily
limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be
greater than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 62cm.

That regulation for sub-areas 18. etc. is really bizarre. It means we can only keep two chinook if one or both of them are in the narrow 5 cm range between 62 and 67 cm. May as well say you can only keep one fish over 62cm and have done with it. The chances of catching one in that narrow 5cm slot range so you can keep two are very small!!

Yes it can be:confused: welcome to fishing the D.F.OED way E.M... every year we scratch our head:confused: & wonder what's next!...besides all that extra handling/measurement can't be good for them.
Take for eg: the recent slot limit in our area (vic/sooke) they remove the wild slot limit to 1/1 (1=67cm+/1=67-)
all this magically is in effect @ midnight/eve of the derby(jdf) one can only imagine what all this sorting/etc. will do to harm our wild salmon stocks.
