Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii Fishing Report for June 4-8, 2013

I just got back from my Spring trip and fishing has been amazing this past week. Plenty of Chinook Salmon have been seen in the area and most regular fishing spots are full of fish!

Mooching and trolling depths vary with 15-21 pulls being the best mooching depths in 60-100 feet of water and 9-15 pulls in 40-60 feel of water.

Trolling/down rigging depths are similar at 20-80 feet. Biggest Chinooks on our trip were 40 lb, 42.5 lb, 45 lb and 50 lb. Everyone limited out on Chinooks. Lots in the upper teens and some groups in the mid to upper 20's. There was also a smattering of 4-7 lb cohos (good to see this early), 2 chum (~ 7 lbs) and 1 six pound sockeye. Bottom fishing was ok although the halibut rule sucks. If they would only make halibut commercial fishermen fish their own quota or lose it that could free up some. The sport fishing industry makes so much more money than commercial for the economy. Also the commercial guys should be excluded from a 20 mile radius around any sport fishing operation. Why should sport fishermen not catch a 100 lber yet allow long lining commercial fishermen in to take everything? Enough of that rant.

What was working up north were cut plug herring (works the best) with spoons and hoochies also bringing in some springs.

Take your time and enjoy the great outdoors!

You may even be surprised with a visitor like what happened to me!

Giant fish caught on 25 lb test and released ;-)
