On The Leader Board!

Over the course of this most Wonderful Season, I had many occasions to witness members of my Crew weigh in qualifying fish for the Ukee Ladder Derby. Being a guide, I of course had not given any thought towards doing the same for myself...

A week ago, my Father wandered up from Idaho, and we had two Fantastic days out on the Big Pond together. Been nearly two years since we had such an opportunity, as our schedules have been incredibly hectic. So it was extremely satisfying to me to get out with my Mentor, share some wonderful stories while catching up, and of course to revel in the Bounty the Mistress Pacific so willingly provided for our entertainment. I thought nothing could top that Very Special Time being with this Special Man I so much admire!

Halfway through the first morning, one of the rods went off with a vengeance! Line ripping off the Islander at a rate that was more than a little concerning! Pa asks How many fish have YOU played this season? None, was my honest reply. I'm in the business of providing FUN for my Crews, and of course that means they work all the fish. Not this time sez he, as he points at the wildly bucking rod - Get Eem! Yeehaw!

As I yanked the rod from the holder, I stared in disbelief at the spool. Mere feet of mono left, meaning that Monster was out there OVER 300 YARDS! EEK!

Pa instantly cleared the other side, and turned the big rig for me so I could possibly manage to gain some of that back! Every time I did manage to gain a few yards, this Beast would run again, stripping dangerously close to the backing over and over! Then, a Savage leap far into the sky, and we instantly realized this was no common fish! Huge mumbled Pa. Holy **** was my reply!

Back and forth the battle raged, and my arms were starting to tremble when the Monster sounded directly under the boat! 45 plus minutes of sheer abandon, the fish doing his absolute best to wrench the offending hook from his maw! Then, a mistake on his part, out from under the boat at speed, the start of another great run. Only this time Pa was blocking his escape route with the net, and with a swoop the beast came onto the deck! Rebel Yells across the water, and Father & Son doing a Wild Dance Of Joy!!

Back to the weigh-in station, where the Beast topped the scales at a mere ounce shy of that magical 40 pound mark! Not the biggest to my rig this year, but certainly big enough to secure my spot on the impending Derby Fish Off!

And of course it happened with my Finest Friend aboard! I am so thankful that He and I are still able to get out and Enjoy Life in the way we always have, and damn pleased he was along when this happened! Doesn't get any better in my books!

Cheers,

Dandy fish, mate. And how old was your dad when you were born? You look like you're the same age. LOL

He has aged a whole lot better than I. Guess you can chalk that up to my driving the ol' body like a race car pretty much my whole span here, with nary a pit stop in sight! ;)

Heck of a fish alright! And the only spring I've actually tackled all year! Super Happy Pa was along for it to happen!

Cheers,

Awesome work Matt!!

I hope to get my Dad out here from the Peg next summer for some fishing.

Makes me want to take my dad fishing too.. Wait I called him last week to go, but he's such a workaholic that he makes excuses steady.... Time to slow down pops, and do the "once in a lifetime" thing I say.

Taking the old man out to Ukee next week to do the same thing. He's now 76 and has been with me on many a trip in the past. Not sure how many more he's got in him, but its always good to see the look on his face when we bring in anything over 20. He's like a 12 year old kid again. I've taken him on trips in the past 5 years to Ukee, the Thompson for big summer runs, Terrace, Kitimat, and more than a few Fraser forays.

Its gets a little tougher for him on each trip, but he still loves it and look sforward to it every time.

Awesome catch Nog, I've done some fishing with my dad this year and I agree those are special moments. A fish of a lifetime like that makes it all the more rare.

Heartwarming! Gotta' get my boy out on the boat... my Pa is too old and not in very good shape :(

If your dad is still around to talk with, take pics and show him, if he can get out take him out. You never know what life has in store for you. My dad is gone now but I have an older friend who lives at Bate's beach and I use my air miles to get him to Prince Rupert every summer and we go fishing for four days on my boat. He really enjoys this even though he has Parkinson's and it makes it difficult to handle big fish. The day he leaves this world I will have these times to cherish.

EXACTLY Gunsmith! Pa and I aren't getting any younger, that's for sure. He has had a major back operation and knee surgery in the past year, so it is almost surprising he is getting along as well as he is! "Almost" in that he has always been a rather tough Man, and has never let such inconveniences get in his way of enjoying life.

When I was a kid, we had a lot of major disagreements. Back then, I simply didn't see his way of thinking. Funny thing is, the older I got, the righter he was. I am quite grateful that the Fates allowed us the time together for that to happen, and to continue to let us get out and Enjoy each other in such wonderful settings.

I dread the day he leaves me, but recognize that may well happen. When he does, he has left me with a lifetime of Rich and Warm memories to help carry me through until we hunt and fish together again on the other side... This outing VERY MUCH fits into that category, and for me was the highlight of my summer as a consequence! I very much hope we have many more to come...

Cheers,
Nog
