Old tackle box bling and a question.

I was given three old tackle boxes full of tackle, much of it vintage. Lots of old spoons including Krippled K 1, 2 and 3’s. Pt defiance and Tom Mack’s. Lots of Defiance hootchies and some old bucktails many still in packages. Seen most of it over the years however one item has me and @margomallicoat stumped. What is this thing?

I just found on back side “Lure Guard”. Can’t see how it works

Tie it onto a cord then slip in on your mainline when it's snagged slide it down the line and it snags onto the treble hooks on your expensive crankbait which are embedded in some nasty old snag.
