No Anchovies in 2022 Again?

At my local Sobeys. Not the freshest looking but not bad I have to say. Scales and fins look nice and no freezer burn. Thinking I might grab a dozen packs and vacuum seal them so they don’t get burn.

Where in alberta are you?

They are being packed now in commercial quantities which I’m sure will end up at all the normal distributIon centers in the next few weeks. But they’ll be on the small side: 10 cm. Or smaller? I was just offered several truckloads of block frozen from another source: Getting some samples into a sport packer in early July to see if they can work in tray packs and pass the rec-fisher smell test as far as quality goes

If they aren't starved properly and flash frozen quickly the bellies will rot out of them quickly once thawed.

That was my same comment to a bait distributor...he said some guys can work miracles for tray pack if the anchovies didn’t sit around too long after harvest before getting frozen...I’m getting some sample blocks into these guys to see what they say—-size is excellent

deep fry those beauties and eat em like popcorn! Mmmmmmm

This is gonna drive people to use plastic and tin. We’re getting to the point where the economic return is diminishing. I love chovy but it’s work and expensive.

Chovies at the mouth of fraser are too good not to use even if they were 10 bucks per i would still use them in august and september.

I usually fish a medium or large Herring on one side and chovie on the other. Find the bites to be 50/50. Pinks will hit chovies but stay away from Herring. So dollar per pound it's Herring for me. Speaking of the Fraser mouth fishery.
