So the seasons done lets have a report on your new 250 Etec.
Do you love it? Any regrets? Do you wish it was a merc opti instead. How much fuel do you burn in a day. Give us something to talk about

Are you a traitor to the silver Sculpin ?? ;)

Yup. Evil forces pulled me to the dark side ha ha!!!

Pretty shiny still. I'm reeeeealy happy with it so far :). I feel like a kid again with my first two stroke dirt bike (I've never owned a two stroke main outboard before). I have seen the light so to speak. Hole shot and response is insane!!! Fuel economy is very similar but you have to add the oil cost in at the end (these new opti's burn very little oil). I can deal with that for the performance increase. The motor weighs 100 lbs lighter than the Honda and I can feel the difference in the way the boat handles for sure. She used to sit at rest pretty heavy in the stern and is now sitting a bit higher.

The new motor is 25 horse less than the Honda but pushes my boat faster. Testing is still not complete as I only have 21 hours on the new one. I used to be able to get 43 mph WOT with two people in the boat and no load with the Honda. I got that with three full grown men and 500 lbs of ice and tuna going down the canal on the way home in a short burst with the Opti!

What I learned through the whole insurance thing etc. Honda does not pump out very many outboards. The parts are VERY expensive. The parts are VERY hard to come by. Honda changes their motors quite a bit and the parts are not compatible with certain years etc. Mercury does not change a lot within year to year. Their parts are readily available and they are less than half the cost of the Honda parts. They have most parts warehoused here on the West Coast and are readily available. They have service centers all over the place as well. I enjoyed my Honda while I owned it. I believe they make a good outboard motor. There heart is just not in it and the price of parts is crazy!!! I sold that unit less than a week after it was fixed. There is a market for used ones big time. I was just looking for better service and availability of parts etc.

Anyways, 5 year warranty and some piece of mind. A big thanks to the folks at the RPM group. Great pricing and outstanding service.

If Nick doesn't reply soon, I say we hijack the crap out of this thread (like we already haven't :D). Anyone else in..........:p.

The 2013 'Rude 250 lived up to all my expectations and then some. I logged 210 hours since it touched the wet on April 5th, and every one of them was a pleasure! It proved to be a very consistent, reliable motor, and quite frankly, the thing can take some abuse. Just ask this log:

As you can see, not only did the gear case buck a nice piece of firewood off this 40+ foot log, (which I T-boned dead centre) but the durable stainless 4 blade prop filleted the log a dozen times, coming out of the collision without a mark. The hull, to my surprise when I pulled it out of the water, didn't even have a mark I could find. Surprising since I hit it on plane @ 32 mph!

Fuel consumption was great in my opinion. At 28.5' LOA (24.5 hull, 4' pod + engine) and fully loaded and fueled @ approx 5500 lbs, I burn 10.5-11 GPH and anywhere from 2.5-2.8 MPG.

Oil consumption....she's a thirsty beast! But that is largely due to it being the High Output ETEC H.O. model. It burns at a steady 50:1, no matter the grade oil, where as the regular ETEC engine can burn at 100:1, if you use the right (XD100) oil.
Evinrude 2 stroke oil ranges from $30-50/gallon.

The engine at cruise or WOT was quiet, allowing for normal conversation at any given time. The exhaust of this was non existent. She is one clean, actually the cleanest burning outboard on the market. It was great.

Power, there is no shortage of it with these ETECs. So much torque, which was demonstrated on the boats maiden voyage. Coming around its first turn just west of the River Rock Casino, we came upon a stranded 35' formula cruising boat, twinned with Mercury motors (both mercs were DEAD lol. And it sat at the dry dock for weeks and weeks, Mercury, geez!! HAHA jk John!!). He was pinned against the log pilings and was in need of rescue. ETEC to the rescue! We tied on and Trendsetter masterfully towed that pig up river with very little trouble. It was my first day out so I let his experience handle the helm while I manned the ropes. I imagine the Formula's owners embarrassment when my working mans boat towed his very expensive boat home. :)

When she's not towing or chopping firewood, the boat flies. Wide open, it jumps out of the hole like a cheating husband lol. I was proud to have my boat powered by this engine and it treated me right! I would surely look to an etec if I was repowering. I will likely replace my kicker in the next couple years with the beefy Etec 15HO kicker.

She is now out of the water and back home. I am planning to run it a few more times in the river before I wrap it up for the winter. I do not have any scheduled maintenance until I log 300 hours, which is another bonus with this engine. I look forward as well to fogging the engine for the winter with a turn of the ignition, as it winterizes itself.

Very little maintenance.
Reliable.
Powerful.
Efficient.
Hell, it even brines bait!

Great report Nick! Someone had to get your attention lol. Thanks for sharing your experience with the motor so far buddy :). The short run you took me out on was very impressive to say the least. The boat is way bigger in person and the motor is very quiet and pushes her with some serious authority.

That's awesome Nick glad you're happy with it,that's a lot of hours you racked up so you got to do a good evaluation on it.
I will be jealous thinking of you winterizing with the turn of a key

Sculpin what merc did you buy I have an old 225 merc 2 stroke and love it other than the fact it drinks fuel like crazy

Yep that baby flies. Passing everything but the gas station! LOL

@ 27 GPH it only took 0.45 gallons or $2.52 to make that video clip!
