mooching reel review?

there has been a lot of good reviews on this thread by excellent guides here on the island,:p for the money I don't think you can go wrong with the trophy QR, if they can stand up the abuse they get on a guide boat I think you cant go to far wrong.

I know this is a way of stopping line creep on the islanders!!!!!! 600 plus bones only to have to do this to stop it.....REALLY....and this is from a guy WHO LOVES islanders.....LOL

Lol.. Too funny.. Thanks Wolf.. All summer my buddies and i could not figure out what the hell was going on with that set-up. I thought i was missing out on something new.

Guess I will have to form my own opinion on the mr3 as I haven't tried it yet, F.A. just curious what reels you are using now that you sold your islanders?,And thanks again for the estate tackle deal as I just met up with Derby and picked up my commie spoons. Stoked. if they are good enough for the commie fleet they must still work I say!

I am back using my original Shimano 4000's reels. Money is in the bank and will stay there till I find something that actually works as they should.

Nice meeting u.. :)

Roger that Derby, likewise, F.A. I am glad you were able to get your money back after being unsatisfied ,mine was a gift for my 40th so no returning it. will still be running my 2000 n 4000 shimano's also and will be forming my own opinion. kinda don't like seeing wolfs photo as that is the exact combo I have. only time will tell.

I have the Shift mooching reels and they are great. Fast pickup, large arbour and nice big handles.

whats the pros and cons of ported back vs solid back?

Ported reels are slightly lighter in weight and to some look nicer. Solid back reels are more waterproof when raining and may require slightly less maintenance due to lubricant being diluted and/or washed away. All in all not all that much difference in most cases.

So true, especially if you fish as much as you do and scrape bottom in 200 feet of water.

You look after your gear, as do guides, but maybe we need three categories of usage here. Level 1 are guides and Charters, Level 2 are avid Sporties who get out a lot, and Level 3 are Sporties 5-10 days a year on the water. What reel performs best for each category?

Thanks WW thats kinda what I thought

I dont hear much about Amundsons? Anyone running the Pnt one? Toss up between a Trophy QR or Amundson I think. I hear the drag is very touchy with the QR's? either full off or full on? Not sure I can believe that with so many people liking them. Im wondering if the TMX5 is going to be out this year and what price..? seems the boat shows are the place to get the best prices on reels? Prices seems to be all over the place.

Well 6 years and I dont seem to have a problem maybe go out with some that has them ...btw boat will be ready in a months or so LOL

I have a couple of QR's that I got used from Derby and I have swapped out the drag springs with islander springs. About $10 each spring. Now the drags respond the same as my fishing buddies MR3's. We stack 4 rods so good to have similar feel on the drags on each side of the boat. We also have a couple of shimanos which are decent.
Lastly I have some mitchell 782s with retro-fitted carbon fibre drag washers that I use for my kids or people that can't work knuckle busters. Very smooth drags and they are the least likely to creep out of all the 4 reels mentioned. Saves some break offs as they have an anti reverse clutch.

The Amundsen have been working good from what I heard.....even something new in the works...just need to test it out first....should have some samples shortly.... :)

With the PNT Amundson TMX4-G (Whatever it is), it's basically the same as a standard TMX4, just that the back isn't ported, meaning it 'allegedly' stands up better to washout, etc. Plus it also has an extra clicker/dinner bell in it. Gold/light brown colour.

The 'base' TMX4 model is ported in the back, no extra clicker (but there is a provision for one). I actually really like mine, great bang for the buck reels in very smoothly and isn't too loud. They have another reel called the "Mooching Specialist" I think was what I saw, plus the TMX5 which is coming out next year? Anyways, for the price of the special edition PNT reel, I could have bought one and a half of the standard model, it pays to shop around! :)
