Mercrusier Steering problems

When I start my boat the steering wheel banks all the way to the right. It has power steering and I am just a new boat owner. The wheel just cranks automatically to the right and you have to hold on it at all times to keep it straight - any ideas

Sounds like one of the check valves in your helm is jammed or sticking. I would be inclined to take it to a dealership and have it checked out. It may be as simple as having the system flushed.

When you start the engine the power steering pump pressurizes the system. With one of the check valves stuck open or blocked by a piece of debri the fluid bypasses the valve and turns the wheel. Flushing may or may not work but it's an inexpensive first option to try. Some units are serviceable, others aren't and you have to replace the whole unit. Have them try a flush first...with your fingers & toes crossed...
