You should net a few bucks by selling your unit as a parts motor. Injection, ECU and especially lower unit have value, and the cowling too if it's in reasonable shape. Obviously you reduce your costs if you have the setup and ability to remove it and drop it on an outboard pallet yourself. Price it at 50-60% of the cost of a new lower unit to make it attractive enough for someone to buy the whole thing. Parting out a blown motor takes ages, draws out the agony even longer.

Thanks, I just started looking into the value of the 250 last night because I am working on a deal for a used unit right now. I was told there was no value in the existing 250 but a pretty quick search showed prices of 3-4 K just for the comparable lower unit without considering the ECU etc.

A working tilt/trim unit is worth bucks too, and a reasonably common replacement. Added up, there is some value on that pallet. Take some video of the tilt/ trim still working before it's removed from the hull, and be sure it has some shots of general condition of cowlings. Advertise it on FB marketplace first for local market, then further afield for specialist purchaser on eBay, shipping at buyers cost obviously.

Thanks DAJ and Kaelc. Both responses were forthright and provided me a few variations on how to proceed. Heading to the shop later this week to run through a few options. Was informed of a used unit that came in but still would set me back 23k when the ink dried. Might as well put on new at that point and enjoy the boat for a few years

No, just a poor choice of wording on my part - didn't explain it fully. Putting on a motor that I know has been ran through a diagnostics test etc so I can use it for up to two years if the market slows. Going to put it up right away once the motor is on then watch how boats Arte moving. After much input, I feel it will attract a wider market with motor included.

So, a decision has been made, owing mostly to all the fantastic input and advice from this forum. This has been a really interesting journey so to speak. Being without a boat for the last 4-5 weeks has been painful - can't begin to fathom what those of you on long-term builds feel . Lots of calls, research, and spreadsheets led to the decision to hang a used unit on the back.

Found a reasonably priced 2015 225 with DEC wiring, gauges, etc. Less than 700 hrs. Worked out a few other details etc so should have it back at the end of next week.

Still plan to sell it so added bonus is that I fell good knowing that it has gone through a complete shop diagnostics etc. If it sells in the next month or so, great, if not, will pull it for the winter and re-post in the Spring.

BTW, expect to see a Yamaha 250 with bearing issues listed soon for parts - brought a motor pallet with me so they will load it right onto that.

Ah, that question belongs on a separate spreadsheet!

Here is the criteria:

Trailerable (sets max at 30' +/-)
Outboard - preferably podded for maximum deck space - especially if 22' boat to start with
Pilot House (or covered seating for 4 in some other manner)
Sleeping cuddy for 1-3 nights on the hook capabilty
Prefer separate head over cuddy head
Fridge
Dinette style table

Don't mind doing wiring, adding flex, etc so those features would be nice but not essential to finding the right bones. Every boat I have looked at keeps going up against a Sea Sport - would like to find other alternatives. Champagne taste with a beer budget type of guy. Will be an interesting search.

Looking forward to your listing. How much is the reasonably priced engine if you don’t mind me asking. Going through the exact same dilemma. Gonna make a decision once my mechanic comes back with a diagnosis on the engine.
