I wonder if the Consignees for those toys, clothing, automotive parts, industrial parts and furniture ever see one penny of compensation from Maersk...I received a container of squid from Argentina in a container this past July that had a leaky seal on the door...the squid was dripping when it arrived at the warehouse..the container company who delivered the container burst out laughing and rolled on the floor when I suggested compensation for the temp abused bait
Bit of a Seller's market out there for steamship lines...they truly don't care what happens to your cargo, and 104 containers floating around in the Strait of JDF and a burning container ship sure won’t help that situation

Maritime law is weird for sure, and those commercially trading vessels are on the clock 24 x 7 to beat the clock to the next port. There is a reticence to implement technology to monitor and preserve cargo at sea, in addition to some insurmountable challenges for digital solutions while off shore until Elon saves us all with next gen low orbit data coms.

It is a crews worst nightmare to have a fire on a container vessel as these can burn for a long time before detected. I wonder where this vessel will finally come into port? I bet it is at anchor for a long time while it is structurally evaluated before any port will issue an entry permit.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN1138-PRECAUTIONARY NOTICE - All Species - Area 19, 20, 121, 123, 23, 124, 24, 125, 25, 126, 26 - Ongoing Vessel Fire Response Operations and Drifting Containers

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is alerting all harvesters about ongoing response operations related to a fire on a container vessel near Victoria at Constance Bank. Air monitoring and hazmat teams are on site and a 1 nautical mile exclusion zone has been established around the vessel while firefighting is ongoing in Pacific Fisheries Management Area 19-3.

The vessel lost more than 100 shipping containers at the entrance of Juan de Fuca on Friday, October 22, 2021. The containers could potentially be found as far north as Cape Scott. Two of the containers contain hazardous material. Any containers or large amounts of debris floating or onshore should not be approached or handled. Efforts by the Canadian Coast Guard to locate the containers are ongoing with support from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transport Canada, and BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. The vessel owner has hired a contractor to salvage the containers.

A Notice to Mariners has been issued to watch for floating debris. Please notify the Canadian Coast Guard’s Regional Operations Center (1-800-889-8852) immediately of the location and type of debris spotted to minimize risk. Further information will be communicated as needed when it becomes available.

Harvey Humchitt Jr, the lighthouse keeper at Cape Scott (https://www.albernivalleynews.com/news/island-lighthouse-keeper-chased-by-wolf/) shared photos of Guise Bay on FB this morning. It’s covered with the same kinds of container debris as at Palmerston. Not sure if there is another container aground there or just drift.
Anyway, I wouldn’t want to be a dragger these days.

Summary​

• The fire is out and cargo is being recovered from the MV Zim Kingston, a ship that was aflame for days in rough seas
• Teams at multiple locations have recovered 65 bags of debris and around 70 refrigerators
• No contaminants have been detected in the air on the shore or on board

The MV Zim Kingston will be safely moved to port after losing over 100 containers in rough seas and suffering a fire on board that continued for days. The fire is now extinguished and containers are being recovered.
The cargo ship off the coast of Victoria is on its way to the shore, and cleanup efforts are underway on surrounding beaches.

Teams at multiple locations have recovered 65 bags of debris and around 70 refrigerators.
“The vessel is making plans with the Pacific Pilotage Authority, Transport Canada and the responsible person for transit to a safe port. All safety and environmental concerns will be addressed before the plan is put into action,” said B.C. Spill Response in an update on its website.

Nobody take this post too seriously, it's intended purely as a joke about my own quirky take on the world but when I read the above about an entourage escorting it East, on some level I was kind of like "ha good" because at my heart I'm basically a Western separatist (although I admit to having conflicting and/or overlapping loyalties for all of the following: The Republic of Vancouver Island, Cascadia, Albumbia, the Western Canada Concept - geographically, not the org - and my own fictional alternate history in which the entire continent was split on a longitudinal rather than latitudinal axis) and I got this brief cartoon image of us dumping a wrecked, smouldering hulk on Ottawa et al and that's the kind of thing that makes me smile inwardly.

Then I was like oh wait it's on the Pacific, taking it east is just bringing it here dammit

Well, if it is going to Nanaimo, it may disturb the winter tyees around Thrasher. These are the most critical food source for the southern resident orcas. The Marine mammal watch will be recording the noise made by their outboards and the rest of the entourage to quantify the damage to these winter tyees before they start advocating for a prohibition on recreational fishing opportunities on the Thrasher winter tyees.

Saw a bit on the news last night. Could be wrong but it looked to me like it was a whale watching boat. I'm betting it's a bit of a PR stunt and that they weren't official or paid.
