elk lake Victoria??

I have found that to catch the lunkers in Elk on the troll, use the biggest lure that is reasonable. I favor a #9 jointed Rap in Perch and have had good results with this size in black/silver as well. I fish with a buddy who insists on tying on a 4'' Tomic (usually in frog) when trolling this lake. Five (maybe six) years ago, I remember a two month stretch (June/July) when there were a large number of +20'' Rainbows caught. One evening we caught three over 20'', the biggest being 24.5''. Just couldn't keep them off the hook. Even the guys pulling ganglies (gang trolls) were pulling big fish (which is unusual). Haven't seen the like since. Perhaps a bunch of brood stock were released here, though this seems unlikely as the nearest hatchery is Duncan. Perhaps a bunch of experimental tripliods (electrically sterilized) all matured at the same time. Nothing about Elk surprises me anymore (anybody caught a Piranah in there yet?). The biggest trout I've heard of out of the lake was a 26'' Rainbow, caught in the spring on a Chiromonid. That said, if you are pulling plugs, keep 'em big.

thanks for your feed back. I will try and use a plug on one side and a jointed rapala on the other. I have been fishing a lot up at nitinat in the river for springs so I havent been on the lake for two weeks now. maybe now that the colder weather has hit the fishing will pick up. I am going to go out on sunday. I have had amazing success with using ford fenders and worms I usually always catch my limit the only problem is the fish have been relatively small. like I said I have caught two on at 18 inches and one at 19 both one being 2.1 lbs and the other 2.2 lbs. I have heard they get up to 5 to 7 lbs. but maybe it is my ford fenders keeping them away. I will try on sunday to use the other method i metioned. has anyone fished elk lately trolling I was wondering what depth the fish are at right now. I have a fish finder but It doesn't always seem to work for finding fish. I find it most useful for detecting the bottom of the lake. so I don't troll to deep. Anyway thanks for all your feed back anymore is helpful. all the best and good fishing bob

Ok I have tried everything suggested an more. I tried trolling just a perch colour jointed rapala. I tried trolling extremely slow with just a fly ( a leech ), I tried trolling extremely slow with just a worm no flasher mostly on the highway side of the lake. and guess what nothing not even a bite. I tried trolling one day with a fly on one side and just a worm on the other as slow as possable one at 15 feet the other at 10 feet and occassionally at 20 feet not a bite so I switched to using a ford fender with a bright red insert and nailed three right away again not to big but one was 17 and another 15 inches. the 17 was 1.8 lbs. So I don't know I am skeptical about not using a flasher or a troll. I was at island outfitters and elliot told me that a kid pulled a 9.5 lbs rainbow out of the lake last week. and that he caught two one 21 and a 23 inch trout just trolling a flie really slowly. I tried this and even did slow s turns but maybe I am missing something my goal is to catch on over 20 inches my closest is 19 and that was in august. anyway still having fun maybe there just isn't many big fish in elk lake. how is everyone elses luck here??? thanks Bob

It seems like every boat at Elk lake is catching fish but they are mostly the small trout. Its easy to get your limit of smaller trout by using Rapala lures, gang troll or cowichan spoons. The trout seem to be at every depth close and far from shore. Be aware of the rowing events this and next few weekends as it is really busy.

In June I hooked a really big trout that must of been several pounds but the line broke as it was inches from the net <img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle> and it took my $10 Rapala

I am going to try and fish elk lake tomorrow. The other problem I have is that I rarely get to go out for more than a couple of hours. So tomorrow will be the same but I am still looking to break either the 20 inch or the 3 lb mark, thats my goal for the lake, there is defenitely lots of fish I always catch my limit now but as of the last few outings my fish have ranged from 12 to 17 inches, nothing over 2lbs. as for the rowers I have been quite impressed they have acctually been pretty good about going around me, just gotta watch out for some of those girls wow!!! :)
