downrigger weights

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of using the round downrigger cannon balls vs the flat plates?

Pancakes have less drag in the water. I fish the round ones w/ fins mainly because that's how I'm set-up (I pour my own).

I like the balls best, here's why:

- while pancakes have less forward drag, they will be pushed in and out more by side currents then balls

- the round shape bounces off the bottom more then the thin, sharp pancake shape

- balls are usually cheaper. If you may have noticed the price of lead weights has increased lately. That's my 2 bits.

At Peters sports in Courtenay they have fish shaped weights,best I've used yet

i use pancakes... wokr very well when stacking rods... i do agree though with the bouncing bottom and side curretns... but no problems so far... i do bend the fins though so the lines dont go under the boat
