cowichan chum

Try moving towards Arbutus Ridge from the Narrows in an almost straight line, especially on the ebb. Reverse direction on the flood. Then, try going back and forth across Satellite Channel sideways to the tide. Or, move up past Burial Island closer to Bold Bluff - stay mid channel and work the rip on the ebb tide. Once the bay opens up I'm going to be working it hard as I haven't fished in there since my teens!

50 & 70 feet, blue & pink squirt sized hoochie with a pink haze flasher. Jellyfish or Blue full sized hoochie with a purple haze flasher.

Keep a bucktail or cut plugright fairly shallow at all times no matter how slow you're going - the Coho will only be increasing in numbers over the next couple of weeks (we hope!!).

Some folks whose advice in this area I'd trust have told me that placing a small purple or green spin & glow with mylar wings in front of the hoochie improves things a bit. Haven't tried it yet BUT I did buy the spin & glows so maybe next time!

I should be out this weekend weather permitting. I'll keep an eye out for you if I know what your boat looks like....

BOB,
I was wondering if you would let me know where you fish around the cowichan area , where I should launch from how much travel time there is on the water, does it get pretty rough at times there ?
I want to fish a bit closer then campbell river and have always been interested in the cowichan area.
let me know.

SB - There's lots of areas to fish around Cowichan Bay. The Gov't launch ramp is right in Cowichan Bay, at the Duncan end of town.

Remember that the Bay itself is closed to all types of fishing most of the year - check the regulations before heading out.

I believe that exploring and finding new spots is one of the best parts of fishing. Look at some charts. Look for other boats fishing (by far your best bet!!). Look at other posts on this site and you'll be off to a great start. You can find great fishing in typically calm waters in under 1\2 hour from the Cowichan Bay launch ramp throughout the late Spring, Summer and Fall months. Its no where as consistently productive as the West Coast or Juan De Fuca, but a hell of a lot closer (if you live in the Cowichan Valley) and typically a lot nicer conditions.

Good luck, have fun exploring!!

I fish the surface fish at 3 - 6ft deep or 2-3 oz 's down about 50-60 ft back of the boat with anchovies or pink blue squirts 26-32 in leader . 1.8 mph in a low current area dead slow they are spooky so troll the around them ,you will mainly get males =

Great, The reason I asked is I owned her in the mid 90's.It was or is a great boat. When I had it,it had 470's for power but I heard that she had been repowerd. It was docked in cow bay when I had it.There has been a fair about of fish blood on her deck.I have seen it many times fishing out of port.Every time I saw her I kinda wished I still owned it.Good luck.

So it was yours was it.I heard it was from here .I just bought it from Hans.Repowered at port Boat house with 4.3 mercs/bravo II legs. Its back at Cow bay.I keep her at cow bay marina dock 3.Behind Hilarys cheese.Stop by and say hi to her.Exterior needs some touch up but interior is mint.Hans loaded her up with electronics.Magellan,Lowrance,sonar/gps(color),scotty black box.
I'm looking forward to many fun times on her.It was a step up from a 21.5 glasply I kept in cow bay as well. It'll take some getting used to though.
What do you have now?

it must be something in the water

It's good to hear she is home again.I have a much smaller boat now.A Malibu 182.My wife and I wanted to spend more time on the west coast ie nootka, ucluelet so we sold it for a trailerable boat. The 182 has a nice cuddy and a head but we do miss the space. The 4.3's should be perfect power for Zilla. We had many good nights anchored all over the east side with her.hope to see you and Zilla on the water sometime. We spend very little time fishing down there but I will on occasion put in at cow bay and run to sidney.Enjoy we did.

just wondering, where did the name come from?or was it already named when you bought it.

it must be something in the water

It was named Zilla when I bought it from a guy in Tashis. He was the second owner, he bought it from a guy in Vancouver. The name was the same then.I thought the name and the wooden name plate was kinda cool so I kept it that way.

well, she shall stay ZILLA.My other boat had a name I wasn't fond of so I changed it to knuckle buster.Big mistake. Its like I jinxed it.Fishing production went way down.I was warned but never listened. From what i've been told,Zilla catches fish.So it'll stay that name. The wood plaques need to be taken off and refinished though.
She'll get a good try out this winter for local chinook then what ever comes next.Like to do some weekends around Porlier or Sidney/Victoria when the fishing is good in those spots.
