Buying a boat in USA.

Just saw these sweet boats listed...not affiliated in any way...just passing on the info for those that are looking.

this one is a serious machine for our waters and I think it's priced pretty fair.

Hi guys,my dad and his buddy flew to P.A. and bought a 208 Grady and the owners pickup as well. The pickup, a '95 F150 had 63K miles on it, and in immaculate shape. Average 11 mpg. 930$ for gas.Just over 3100 miles in 5 days.Less than 35 minutes at the Blaine truck crossing. They drove approx. 600 miles a day.And get this, when his buddy got home his wife didn't like the boat as there is no place to make tea!!! The boat is now up for sale.He can be reached @ 250-247-8765, Gary would be the guy you need to talk to. I don't have any pictures right now, but the boat is in great shape. 175 Black Max with 300 hours, and a 9.9 Mercaha kicker on a Garelick bracket and hydraulic tilt.Brand new canvas etc.Truck and boat 26K.

Wife said sell your toys and go buy it. She knows me too well. This is a great deal if the boat is late 90’s. Where is the boat now?

Hi guys, the boat is on Gabriola Island. It is a 1988 208 Overnighter. The old guy they bought it off was really particular. He replaced the batteries and the boxes 'cause they were a little dirty. The boat spent most of it's time in a barn under a cover. It is in really good shape. He also replaced the fuel tank and any thing that might need it. The kicker has forward controls, but is not a high thrust. Bolt on your Scotties and your fishing. Also, chartplotter with B.C. maps, VHF, sounder, stereo, etc. Phone Gary @ 2502478765 for more info.

Just bought a 2002 19' North River welded aluminum with a brand new 2008 Merc 115 Opti/controls/cables and Ezloader trailer in Sacremento based on dealer pictures. No state tax payable in California if you sign a declaration that you won't be registering the boat in that state. Fingers crossed it looks as good in person as it does in the photo's when I drive down to pick it up in January...

If all goes well I'll get the boat, motor and trailer for less than the cost of a 2007 version of just the boat in Canada. Free outboard, controls and trailer seems like a good deal for a few hundred hours of use on the boat given it's welded aluminum.

Gotta love a strong Canadian dollar and a weaker US economy :D

Bumping this thread forward to report my experience

Just finishing up importing my new-to-me Campion 542. Passed the RIV federal inspection today at Cdn Tire, now just need to get my K number and I'm done. The notes posted back at Nov were incredibly helpful, thanks to you all for writing them out. Here's some random thoughts from my going through it:

-- ensure vendor signs both deed to trailer and boat, and also fills out the transfer info on the back.

-- ensure trailer has the sticker showing serial number, so it can be connected to the deed. As far as I know, you no longer need the letter about recall history.

-- bring a copy of the boat ad to the border and bring a copy of money order or certified cheque receipt, so you can prove what you paid (especially if you got a really good deal, as they will assume you're trying to scam on the tax). Having the boat seller cell phone number handy is probably helpful, just in case.

-- I had my boat surveyed by a professional surveyor in Washington, and this survey works in BC for insurance. So, I insured my boat before I actually owned it, for the drive home.

-- for getting the boat to the border, you can get a temporary license in Washington (similar to BC). The dealership arranged for mine, but I guess you get it at Motor Vehicles Dept equivalent there. I *assume* this also gets you from border to home...but not sure about that.

-- you can get a temporary license in BC to get from your house to RIV inspection centre, $14 for a day. Phone ahead to inspection centre and make a reservation, Cdn Tire had no inspectors on Saturday. No charge there, as you paid for it at border. Ensure you have the Form from the border and the form the border folks email you a couple of days later.

That's all I can think of.

Bottom line: as everyone else said, it was super easy and well worth it. The old days, sitting in your car freaking about what kind of excessive duty they are going to charge you, seem to be over.

Thanks for that.

I plan to go for it next year too. [8D]

No duty on anything manufactured in the USA. You can thank the American free trade agreement for that. You do have to pay the GST and PST.
