Boredom Relief

My dad has had a stack of rough-sawn Gambier Island maple sitting under cover at his place for almost 30 years. He always planned to build some furniture with it but never did. So this has been my project to help keep my mind off the fishing restrictions.

I’m just a weekend garage hacker and realize there are people on here who are real craftsmen who might chuckle if they looked too closely at this. But, I am pleased with how this has turned out given my limited skills and tools.

Holy smokes.

About 10 years ago, my dad pulled some pieces of maple out of the firewood pile because they had neat quilting in the grain. He was going to turn them on the lathe but never did. I grabbed them from him before Christmas and “milled” a few small pieces out of them to make something - very simple, as befits my ability. The grain really popped and has almost a tiger-like appearance.

Did my 2021 Archery kill in a European mount. Bleaching came out well. Hang up in the house garage / cave with some of my others.

My weekly project. Salvaged a nice hunk of conductor pipe from work and some extra pieces I had around home. Hit the metal shop for a few more pieces and got to work.

This will be used with natural wood only. Intended for high heat grilling or meat smoker. Plan on adding a rotisserie attachment later on. Will do small half hogs and lambs on it. The lids slide off to use it as an open pit if wanted. The grills pop out and will top load the wood as needed. Plan is to use mainly tamerack from around home as I have quite a bunch dried to perfection for cooking. Will load it up with wood, let it burn done then place the grills in and start to grill.

It's funner to put a small hook on a bit of mono on a long bamboo stick, then hang a young dandelion for bait and dangle it in front of them. Like tuna poling, but for 7 year olds.
