BC Ferries takes it on the chin from social media

Copied this news article from Castanet news, seems BC Ferries asked for suggestions to name vessels, don't think they will use these.

When BC Ferries put a call out on social media to help name its new ferries, the Crown corporation probably should have anticipated some hilarious and sarcastic responses.

The not-so-popular company running B.C.’s coastal ferry system is feeling the backlash of the Internet in the witty suggestions flooding its social media pages.

From Spirit of the WalletSucker to Incompetence Afloat, BC Ferries isn’t quite receiving the suggestions it had hoped for.

Its well-intentioned campaign launched earlier this week, asking the public to submit names for three new vessels.

Those who enter can win up to $500 to spend on BC Ferries, of course.

The naming rules were quite detailed, including that names should reflect the coastal communities served, should appeal to both residents and visitors, be gender neutral and easy to spell, and should not contain words currently used by BC Ferries, such as queen, spirit or island.

Despite this, the Internet has blown up with suggestions.

There are hundreds of entries on BC Ferries' Facebook and Twitter pages that show anything but love for the fleet. Some of the most popular include:

Queen of Out of Service
Queen of Calamity
Coastal Incompetence
S.S. ShouldveBeenABridge
Queen of Extortion
Queen of the Overpriced
HMS Greed
MV Corporate Pork
Queen of Frivolous Spending that will Require a Cut in Service and Hike in Fare Prices
Queen of No Other Choice
Queen of the Cash Cow
The Christy Clark Ark
Some poked fun at the contest prize, implying the $500 is a one-way trip for their family.

The contest closes June 9, while the first of the new ships is scheduled to make its debut next summer.

this is totally great.. - disgruntled travellers -never on time - get ya both ways-

Interesting that the Liberals politicized the fast ferries and convinced everyone they were a bad deal only to turn around and pour billions into ferries. The ferry to Port Angeles is an old ferry and does the trick. How about putting on no frills runs to see how the public likes them, at a much reduced price?

I like that idea - a no frills run/boat - at cheaper rates. I think the public would vote with their $$.

the one thing the liberals are good at besides making their buddies rich and the rest of the population poor, is the smear campaign...the port angeles system is way more efficient and cost effective for the consumer than ours is... I've experienced it myself a couple times. much more affordable.

Increased prices + reduced service = trade your way out of trouble. AKA the Canada Post business model.
