FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND,
UCLUELET (WEST COAST) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM

December 9th 2008
Doug Lindores
Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing

Christmas and the first day of winter are both quickly approaching. Once we get into the New Year many individuals will take their minds of the global crisis we have encountered and think of the brighter days that lay ahead. Many will plan their summer fishing trips in either the protected waters or the Port Alberni Inlet or Barkley Sound areas. Others will choose Vancouver Islands West Coast and fish the waters offshore.
However at the moment most avid fishermen who fish saltwater probably have their Christmas fishing wish list in and are only slightly thinking of those great summer days that lay ahead on the water. Items from new rods and reels to various lures and flashers are examples of what some folk may want. Some might also be fortunate enough to put on their list some new electronic equipment or even a fishing trip or two.
At the moment the best fishing opportunity is in the many river systems on Vancouver Island. The Upper and Lower Stamp River located just outside Port Alberni
has some absolutely wonderful steelhead fishing. Fishing for Feeder Chinook in Barkley Sound and the waters off of Ucluelet has been slow.

Stamp River
The Stamp River Salmon counters are now closed. The 2008 return of Chinook and Coho are now in. The Robertson Creek Hatchery got its egg count but the 27,000 Chinook forecast return was close to 4,000 Chinook Salmon short. Coho numbers were very good with the final tally to the hatchery at about 43,000.

Steelhead fishing in the Upper and Lower Stamp River has been good. Stamp River fishing is absolutely wonderful. Not only has the fishing been excellent but just being in the great outdoors is absolutely fantastic. The scenery along the river is superb along with the many wonders and sounds of nature. The Lower River was a little slower than the Upper River but has really improved over the last four days and is very close to the fishing in the Upper. There is a mix of summer-fall Steelhead and winter Steelhead. The winter Steelhead are more prominent in the Lower River. Those fishing below “the bucket” can use natural bait like salmon eggs in roe bags or shrimp. Fishermen who are fishing above “the bucket” must remember that only artificial lures can be used. The best choice of artificial lures are red spin-n-glows, a corkie, or gooeybobs in a subtle color. Those coming to the area and not using a guide or drift boat can enter the river at the Gun Range or the Galaxy Campground. People are also fishing above Stamp Falls. Guides in boats are still treating their guests to some unbelievable fishing. For example this past weekend guests from Edmonton and Victoria who had never fished the river played six or seven steelhead each. If you have never fished in the river the various guides will work with you and by the end of the day you will feel like you have done this type of fishing for many years.
If you are fishing the river on your own or fishing on a guided trip you will notice that there are various methods and equipment being used. When the water is low due to dry and cool weather the gear being used is quite small. The leader lengths are also longer and lighter. For example, at the moment, because we have not had a lot of rainfall, guides, when using a spin-n-glow are using a #12 in a cherise color. When there is high water use large gear with shorter leaders and brighter lure colors. Guides will use large pink worms or a #8 or 10 spin-n-glow with a luminescence finish.
For more information on current conditions and river fishing call or email Doug at 1 877 314 6800.

Port Alberni Inlet
Barkley Sound
Ucluelet

There is not a whole lot of action in either of the areas. There are a few winter Chinook being picked up around Swale Rock and Vernon Bay located in Barkley Sound in 125 to 135 feet of water. Anchovy in a chartreuse Rhys Davis teaser head is working as are various white hootchies. The same holds true out of Ucluelet where during the month of November it is very difficult to fish due to winter storms. We have been able to fish a couple of days one of those being on Sunday December 7th. Beg Island and Sail Rock had a few fish and two guests from Alberta were delighted to pickup a 7 and 9 pound winter Chinook on a hootchie with 44 inches of leader. Most of our Ucluelet trips will end up in Barkley Sound. We will include prawn and crab fishing plus Feeder Chinook fishing. We are now booking trips out of Ucluelet where we will also have our Seafood Safari. The Seafood Safari is very popular where guests have opportunity to fish for salmon, rock fish, prawns and crab. Trips begin in January with the Seafood Safari actually getting under way in late March.

The Inlet will not have any salmon sport fishing opportunity until the sockeye arrive next June. Following the sockeye fishery Chinook begin to show by the 10th or so of August followed by Coho in early September. The return of Chinook and Coho once again looks fairly promising for 2009.

The 2009 Summer Barkley Sound fishing should be very good. We are looking forward to some excellent June and July fishing. The migratory numbers will be strong. The Columbia River for example is forecast to have big returns of fish. Many of these fish come into Barkley Sound to feed on the rich resources of bait fish. In August and September the areas returning salmon show up with many returning to their natural streams or head up to the Alberni Inlet where they return to the Robertson Creek Hatchery or many of the tributary streams or creeks.

Don't know where you got your report Fog Ducker but the Bamfield road is about the best it's been in a couple of months. Freshly graded all the way to the 'Nook. A little snow from Port to just past China Creek, with graders working. Snow caused a tree to come down about 15km but we expect the power back on soon. Drove it both ways today.
On the fishing side it's a little slow aound Bamfield this week. These big tides, 13 ft. - -0.3 ft don't help much. A few days ago one boat had 7 off the harbour mouth and another had 12 near Vernon Bay. Mostly small fish 6 - 8 #s.
Prawning is good but not red hot. They are getting bigger by the week though.
Tight lines, Bod

Agree , Roads are in great shape , Yesterday!! " A LITTLE Snow " caused a tree to BREAK !! Power out all the way to Bamfield , hmmm ,I'll let you guy's figure that one out .Reports came from Peter and Gary from Poett Nook, thanks guy's appreciate it, hard to stay warm in my trailer without any power !!( even with the Bear Gary !! ) the Power was still out last i spoke to Gary , Good enough to keep me from going up , just cautioning all , that's all, Carefull. FD[)]

The prawning's been actually pretty good out there guys. Not sure how often you are setting your traps but we've had gear in the water most days over the last 2 weeks and have been averaging over 200 in spots not far away from Bamfield inlet. There's lots of big females (which are going over the side of course..;) and some bigger 3 year olds as well. The spawners are 4 by the way.

Hey guys...can't get the add pic button to work...is there a trick to it? I'll put up some prawn pics and show you what's out there.

Went to the Loggers Derby one Spring, about 5-6 years ago and the Nook had a skim of ice over it when we got up to fish in the morning.

Kind of weird to say the least.

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND,
UCLUELET (WEST COAST) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER SYSTEM

January 6th 2009

Winter in the Alberni Valley and the West Coast of Vancouver Island has had many
Unusually cool and snowy days. There have also been some clear bright and sunny days which have developed into some spectacular scenic opportunities for many people who have ventured up and down the Port Alberni Inlet and out into magnificent Barkley Sound. The Stamp River which is world famous for its salmon and steelhead runs has been a winter paradise for well over a month. There has been no rainfall for quite some time and the Stamp is getting remarkably low. With milder temperatures and rain in the weather forecast for the next 4 or 5 days the snow melt should create a dramatic rise in the water.

Stamp River
Winter Steelhead were coming into the system in fairly good numbers in mid December. School sizes had very good numbers of fish. The fresh fish coming in were biting and guests at that time were hooking into eight to twelve fish per trip. Many of the early fish were wild and have moved into the upper river. With low water these fish are rather sluggish and but for a few seemed disinterested in the artificial lures being thrown at them. Fresh fish coming into the system are holding off until the water comes up. The fishing has slowed down over the last week. The mild conditions which are now just developing and the snow melt of three and a half to four feet will create perfect conditions for fresh fish to come into the lower river. We are expecting some spectacular steelhead fishing by the end of this week.
The lower half of the river below “the bucket” anglers are reminded that natural bait can be used. Most of the guides are using salmon eggs in roe bags and shrimp. When above “the bucket” fishermen can only use artificials. Red spin-n-glows, corkies, gooebobs, and large pink worms are good to have in ones tackle. With the water currently still low remember to use small gear but a longer leader and light line. A #12 spin-n-glow in a cherise color seems to be really working the best. As this week progresses and the water gets higher anglers might want to switch to larger gear and a shorter leader and use bright lure colors. With high water it is also a good idea to try the large pink worms and if using a spin-n-glow go to a #8 or 10.
The expectation of the steelhead fishing through March is very good. Since early October the Stamp has had a very good year. You can e mail Doug for any fishing or accomodation inquiries. We are already booking next September and October River trips with people anticipating what has already been forecast as another great Coho and Summer Steelhead year.

Port Alberni Inlet
Port Alberni Harbour

The only type of fishing in the Inlet is the prawn openings. Please make sure this fishery is open by calling the local DFO office. Winter Chinook in past years have followed the bait right up into the Franklin-Nahmint area. A few local fishermen seem to have a knack of knowing when the bait is around only because they are out prawning and have found the vast quantities of bait in the area. We are anticipating a sport sockeye fishery in the summer of 2009. The sockeye fishery is a fun fishery for the family. When the Somass River reaches 18 degrees Celsius the sockeye begin to school in the Inlet and often are in 50 to 70 feet of water. It is at this time that vast amounts of avid fishermen invade the campground at China Creek and it is almost impossible to get in. It is almost impossible to launch ones boat from the Marina if you are not a guest. Of course by mid August the Chinook returning to Robertson Creek Hatchery begin to show and they are followed by Coho beginning in September. The Port Alberni Salmon Derby will be at the seasons’ peak this year as the Labor Day Weekend will be a little later (September 5, 6, and 7). Individuals should begin to make plans for a good fishery in the harbour and inlet during the summer of 09.

Barkley Sound
Ucluelet (West Coast)
We will begin our feeder Chinook trips in Barkley Sound and areas out of Ucluelet in January. The feeders can range from 8 and up to 20 pounds. They are often fairly deep. Those fishing areas in Barkley Sound like Pill Point, Swale Rock and areas around Vernon Bay will have success fishing from 100 to 135 feet. Samatao is also another good area and if patterns continue this is an area where the Winter Chinook are in shallower water (55 to 75 feet). It is always a good idea to have anchovy and we have found Rhys Davis Teaser Heads in Chartreuse as being very good. Hootchies in various blues and green and white hootchies are good lures if using plastic. Hootchie leader lengths should be 38 to 44 inches trailing green or red hotspot flashers. Of course anglers have so many flasher colors to choose from and may never use red or green. The first weekend of March is the Poett Nook Derby. Last year (08) and the year previous saw a Winter Chinook close to 20 pounds win. This Derby is often very close to the herring spawn which brings in vast numbers of fish.
Ucluelet can be a little iffy in the month of January due to weather but February and March can be spectacular months. If the weather is not good we still fish and take guests into the quiet waters of Barkley Sound. Ucluelet is also the area that we will continue on with our SEAFOD SAFARI. Guests are treated to some great days on the Pacific with salmon, rock fish, prawns, and crab. People often finish the day having a marvelous dinner using the barbecues and other features offered at local resorts and bed and breakfasts.

Summer Outlook
Chinook and Coho returns into the area are forecast to be good. It has also been reported that the migratory fish swimming down the coastline of Vancouver Island will be extremely good this summer. These fish come into Barkley Sound and feed on the rich sources of bait. It looks like the Sound and the areas of the surfline will have spectacular salmon fishing days in 09.
