I still use the plastic cut plugs on occasion. They work well off a trip planner out the back as they have lots of action and you don't need a flasher.
I find you need to fish them a bit slow or they rotate crazy fast. Hold them beside the boat and adjust the speed of the boat till you get a good (not to fast) roll on them. My best fish on one was an 18 lb spring.
