2015 Bamfield Tuna Shootout

Derby just sent me this.....

Good fishing at Barkley Canyon today. It's on like Donkey Kong!!!

20-40 fish for most boats and everyone pulled the pin pretty early due to the nasty SE. Much smaller grade though, still 100 lbs winning. Will post some pics tomorrow.

Went out of Tofino today. 45 miles out.
Landed 16, with one Huge one that looked like it could eat the rest of our catch.
Was a little grey/wet for a while then settled down and had some sunshine.
Bright colors worked best for us today.
Then a Long haul coming back in, 3 hours to cover that 45 miles.

Following this thread I am. Tomorrows looking nice enough to fish out there comfortably. Good luck and play safe. Take lots of pictures for us land locked.

Hey guys....

Not trying to be a dick but it would be appreciated if you guys are going to fish off Tofino if you could use a different channel besides 78A. You are walking all over us.

We switch to 79 when we are tuna fishing to be considerate of the inshore guys and the commercial fishermen

Fair enough we will change it next year. The only people we have heard on it are a few commercial tuna boats who have chatted with us about the fishing. Didn't think you would pick us up over 50 miles away, must have a good antenna.

Great weather and solid fishing today. No wind and sunny skies. Fishing was slow until the afternoon when we found acres of boiling Tuna and a short but ripped bite. Leader board will be changing but the 100 lbs leading might be safe.

Yes. Certainly helpful and appreciated if 79 is the "tuna" vhf channel used when fishing off Tofino or near Tofino. There are a few good reasons for this and locally it is appreciated. keep in mind that there are many vessels salmon fishing off Tofino on 78A so it is a very active frequency. While fishing tuna you may not hear them but they can hear you and it can make communicating on 78a difficult for them or annoying for them to monitor their channel with us tuna heads freeking out about tripleheaders, Dolphins, quintuple headers, blue water water temps, birds Wales, sharks sunfish, how great the fishing is and how much of a blast we are having. While 79 is used locally for certain specific things by the local fleet it seems that sport tuna fishing has found a good channel to use with 79 off Tofino anyway.

now where are all the photos from today. Toe tapping while I wait lol.

Yup, we will choose another channel so we don't walk on the inshore masses chatting about hot mid September coho bites off Tofino...

Results were all over the map today with some boats plugging their holds and others scratching for fish. Again the grade was small with the odd mid 20s. Tons of fun trolling through jumpers smashing bait in oil slick water. We ended up with 21. Will try to get some pics of other crews tomorrow.
