Chinook fishery to close ???

Scofflaws?? WTF?

That "story" certainly paints us with an ugly brush...

It's hard to get the Candian Public to display any empathy for the rec sector when the deck is stacked against us! We may as well start a "Adopt a Fraser Rvr Chinook Salmon Campaign"

I would start looking a little closer to the Fraser itself itself to see where the bigger problem lies...
The cwt retrieval shows a higher percentage were intercepted in the Fraser than in the open ocean.

Stephen Hume you do not have lips to read, you are a chicken, you have a beak and you are beaking off.

California is expecting record Chinook returns to most rivers. Washington and Oregon are expecting big runs as well. Why, because all 3 states use state run hatcheries. Most Canadian hatcheries are closed.DFO takes our license fees and spends it on? The endangered runs up the Fraser need help, we all know that, but cutback after cutback won't help if there is no enhancement going on. If it weren't for the fish heading south, we'd have nothing left in BC. Let's declare war on the US and surrender, then at least we'd have hatcheries and fish.

Wondering out loud if the new Chinook restrictions will kick in June 18 immediately
after the Juan de Fuca derby ?
If that's the case, we'll know it's all political.

After watching the Chek news clip I'm wondering why we don't take the FN's up on their offer for a complete stand down (short term pain for long term again) by everyone? Lets agree to that and call their bluff instead of fighting them. Lets agree and add in the terms verifiable and non-obstruction to all enforcement of those in non-compliance. They are painting us as the greedy fishermen who put ourselves first and don't care about the resource....so lets throw it back at them so the public can see who the goods guys are

I would agree to that if FN would actually stop fishing, but i don't believe it would happen.
If caught fishing illegally, Sporties would be fined and have gear confiscated, FN little or no consequences.

Here is a letter I just sent to the Times Colonist....this is how you will win this fight with the FN

After watching a recent local newscast about the recent DFO meetings with both recreational anglers and also native groups to discuss ongoing decreases in some Fraser River Chinook salmon numbers, something caught my attention. The native spokesman indicated that his group was willing to stand down and accept short term pain for long term gain and suggested recreational anglers do the same. As a 26 year career sport fishing charter operator I would like to take him up on his offer. I would gladly park my boat and ask all my fellow recreational anglers to do the same if the people he represents agree to do the same. Also agree to mutually verifiable compliance and also allow unobstructed DFO enforcement of infractions as they occur by either group. I would gladly step down to see some real progress towards rebuilding Fraser River stocks of concern. DFO's own data indicates that 35% (by far the largest portion) of these fish are caught and killed within the Fraser River itself. Voluntarily removing the unselective gill nets from the river during the salmon's spawning run for a few years will help immensely. So I will take this offer as it appears this may be the only real hope local wild salmon and also local killer whales have at rebounding.

I could do that under those circumstances. I am sure that it would help. The best is that the closure cover about five years but that would be a big sacrifice.

Hope it get's the ink it deserves Rollie. Well said and I would be the first of many to stand next to you on that offer.

It will be around that time frame, for a different reason (although I VERY Much hear what you are saying!)
DFO has NO Idea of what the various run sizes will be. They've admitted to that basically.
The Albion tests are what will (in their mind) largely determine that.
Once the initial data is in hand, they will move one way or the other in response.

profisher: DAMN EXCELLENT LETTER!!!

Cheers,
Nog

Let's get the facts first - we seem to be jumping to premature conclusions here. DFO is saying there will be NO further restrictions if they get enough indication for the Albion Test fishery there will be enough fish. They have no idea really how good the run is until they get a large enough sample at Albion - once we have that data they MAY have to go with further restrictions. Not a done deal yet, so this is just DFO serving early notice of what MAY happen.

The data also shows that most of the Fraser Chinook that are intercepted in salt water recreational fisheries happens in Areas 19/20 - relatively few are caught further up the coast. No point closing down the entire coast. The other problem is we expect record returns of USA Chinook which will make for an exceptional fishery further up the WCVI - no point interfering with good old international relations. God Bless America - land of Fish Hatcheries.

CWT's show up in significant numbers in CR and WCVI. With the restrictions already in place in 19/20 DFO estimates our catch of the stocks of concern is now at 1-2% of the TAC. We started at 11% before the restrictions. CR and WCVI are both higher than 1-2%.

Thanks, I get that. And DFO is just serving notice they may take further measures - the impression we got last night from DFO is everything depends on what the test fishery tells us. There is every possibility we could be looking at no changes over what was in place last season...but they are saying we also need to expect emergency measures if they are necessary.

yeah let's get some real facts first. Oh wait, no data since 2006? Let's throw
Some numbers out there. Funny how you bring up the fact that they are forecasting good returns of US fish, but only mention that it will make for good fishing on wcvi. What about Jdf? Pretty sure lots of those fish cruise through Jdf. That only decreases impact on chinook 4/2 and 5/2. But yeah it's totally fair to shut down only a small portion of the water these fish swim in. If a close is necessary, make it everywhere the fish could be found. You see what's happening here, fisherman willing to share in conservation efforts for the salmon. None of this go after them but just not me.

Hey Dave, actually some of those Columbians do cruise through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As previously discussed you won't find many in front of Victoria - might try Hein Bank? You really want to try to close the fishery every where a Nicola swims? Might be rough... as that would be from the coast of Oregon up through Southeast Alaska. Oh forgot to mention, might as well shut down ALL of Alaska, just in case one swims up to Kodiak Island?

I will gladly supply some information! Guess what - It is even CURRENT and up to date! Guess I might have to call BS on DFO not having current information! Surely if I can get from THEIR information required by the Pacific Salmon Treaty (PST). If they lost THEIR information, I will gladly supply them (and you) where to go and get ALL the current information available, BACK. It happens to be where DFO actually inputs their information for the PST: The Regional Mark Processing Center (RMPC) provides essential services to international, state, federal, and tribal fisheries organizations involved in marking anadromous salmonids throughout the Pacific region.

And… if DFO can’t seem to understand where those Nicola Chinook are being caught from the above… TELL TO HIT THE FRIGG’N “MAP LOCATION” BUTTON!

Charlie, all I'm saying is that I'm willing to shut my 26 year business and life long passion down if it means getting the nets out of the Fraser River for a period of time to give the fish a chance. The FN leaders are painting us as greedy non caring users and themselves as the great salmon guardians. My letter hopefully puts some doubt in the minds of those who get to read it. It is very hard to get anything in print that questions the FN bands, I think this letter has a chance of going to print and the message is a good one.
