Nanaimo and Area reports - Spring and Summer 2011

Went out for the morning bite with Bushy at Gerald. There were lots of boats around and saw a few nets. Bushy put down his favourite coyote/ flasher combo and once again it was the lucky rod. Bushy brought in a feisty low twenties and it was bonked. Ten minutes later the same rod hit, Bushy jumped up and set the hook and passed it off to me holy crap! This thing took off with no stopping and my fingers were burning. He stripped off half my line and then turned and ran right at me and the old Shimano couldnt keep up and gone. I will never hear the end of that one. I took Bushy in and headed out solo and managed my limit in just over an hour. They were 14 and 16lbs one on coyote spoon and the other on hootchie down deep at 180ft. Kelly I have the boat moored at Schooner til next week so if you are around for the long weekend give me a shout, there are some big fish around right now. BRS[/QUOTE
Hey Kelly I think this one got missed it was the last post on the page. Anyway read the last sentence, Thanks BRS

Went to Gerald yesterdy morning and managed my limit. Both were red and they were 14 and 18lbs and at the usual depths and both on small spoons. Kelly I could hear you calling for the Big Red Snapper on the radio but I was trying to get the second one in the net. It's always tricky when you are solo and using spoons with 6 foot leaders and both downriggers stickin out but got lucky on both with the first try. Real drag about the trailer.....mine is in the driveway if you need it. BRS

Bit of a bummer. We hit 4 fish and bonked 2. Released one barely legal and then for some reason tried to handbomb a 15 lber which didn't work.

No idea how coastguard was first on scene since it would have taken at least 30 min for them to get there. I would think there was a number of boats within 10 mintues but i heard it was windy at the time so maybe it blew most people off the water or maybe some didnt have their radio on. I know i fish without my radio on sometimes and will try to make sure not to do this in the future.

Hey Kelly I was in by then but I always have my radio on and could have been there in 5 min. Ya it was blowin NW and there was quite a swell too. Best text I've had in a while was your response to my text"I'm at Gerald channel 68" and you sent back "I'm at the rat's nose on channel 6" Gotta love it. BRS

Yea its a sad situation and to bad we were not out there. Ill have to talk to greg (nicely dunn) and see what happened as it said coast guard was first on scene.

Haha BRS i had a laugh at that also. I couldnt pick you up on 68 out there. I might be in town this weekend and that hali got me thinking of a few spots we know.... If your not working i thought about giving it a go. Ill send a PM.

I pulled the boat this morning and the next time it goes in it is headed for Winter Harbour. Gotta do some maintenance and check everything over and install a new stereo and speakers etc. I noticed some water on the floor of my cuddy and looks like it comin from the toilet WTF. I have never used it I guess I should post in the other forum maybe someone can help me out. BRS

Since DFO has decided to ruin one of the last decent sport fisheries we are going to fish Five Fingers area, has anyone been out lately ?

Hey Blackmax,

I was out there this morning for a couple hours, didnt do to well... trolled for a couple hrs off the fingers and there was a ton of crap in the water, and was quite gusty and chunky out there.

SO not a hardcore fish, but nothing brewing for me!

Saw only one or 2 other boats out there too...

We launched at the ramp by the ferry and went to Five Fingers along with a few other boats. Not a sniff and lots of crap in the water. Got to say you guys are spoiled with such nice launching facilities.

Only 6 bucks then 5 minutes I had the lines down so low fuel costs. Takes the edge off not catching anything.lol

Cheers All,

Picked up a decent one today...lost a couple and then played tuggy with damn seal...who won...THIS TIME!

Back out again tomorrow...which is OUR turn! :)

And only 6 bucks ..Great HEY???
Yearly park passes available from the city if you go out lots. It makes it pretty cheap.

On another note we got out yesterday, early. Off Hudson Rock the first spring attacked the hook very quickly, but a bizarre method of landing. I will post a pic later, but...nice scrap, then at the stern of the boat this one decides he doesn't like the look of the gaff and darts sideways...straight into the kicker prop and instantly jammed between prop and prop guard, just as quickly decapitated and gutted. Carefully used gaff to extract body, then head. Surprisingly little meat damaged. The old boat is so well trained that we don't have to net or gaff, the boat does it all. Have to give the fish it's props tho  A long dry spell later we picked up another legal fish off the Cannery. One more nice one (all reds) into the boat and we were out of time.
Pretty slow, tho a fair number of fish and a fair amount of bait was showing. The radio was quite quiet over all with few fish reported being caught Nanaimo or Vancouver side. Water was a little more clear and quite calm...beautiful.

Was out lastnight for a couple hours off neck and the finger and didnt even get a sniff...

what an amazing evening out there though, best I have seen for calmness and weather in some time. Didn't see much happening around us either? seemed like not a hot night?
