2021 Vancouver-Howe Sound-Sechelt Reports Thread

I fish solo all the time, keep the fish off the stern quarter (I've got remote steering , if you dont , don't know how the hell your gonna do it lol). Once fish at the side of boat, go at the fish with one hand on rod and one on net, once in the net drop your rod (preferable not in the water) and you got er. Been fishing solo 25 years plus with only a few visitors. Dont trust anyone on my rods or net Haha. Good luck you can do it. If not us a gaff .

Drag that hog from Ambleside to thunderbird and you'll be good. Soon as you know it's own guide the boat out of the circus with good tension on the fish, make sure he's still well below the surface and just point out to sea, dodging freighters and yahoo's on seadoos, and when he shows you his side its time for the net. Last thing you want to do solo is try and gill drag him over the gunnels, almost sure he's going to bolt and drag you with him.

the trick is to pull up all downriggers. ive had chinook sit under the boat. they come scope out whats hooked them. keep throttle on change a thing. fight it. the fish is looking for advantage. when youre ahead. turn into the current and damn well go for it. gaff the thing. do it quick. you end the battle less seals less chance of things that will go wrong. i know when i got my 6 year old son on board ill cut the other downrigger clean off if i cant get it the boat. wire cutters or scissors. take the loss and get the spring in the boat.

The better way is to just jump in and grab the ******. Let your boat go. Take the loss.

This is how you fish the cap

4 guests on board you can stack 8 rods

Where to find prawns?
If you follow this thread you will find clues as to where the fish are and how to catch them. You may even find some ideas on where to put your traps down for crab.

When it comes to prawning you will find very little info on where to drop your traps. You will need to do what the rest of us did and explore different areas to find them. It will be a cold day in paradise when anyone gives up a decent prawning area since we all went through the growing pains of finding our own secret spots.

Or, you can be one of the slimeballs that check other people's traps and take their prawns but you better be a religious man if caught.

Good luck finding them, as posted earlier your best bet is at Save-On.

I'll be fishing the Cap tomorrow solo. Always been fishing with at least one person in the boat besides me. Would be interesting to see IF I catch one of those big spring, I could actually land it by myself.
If you are fishing the cap alone, you can always ask the boat 5' away to net it for you but you might need to give them a beverage or two to get it back.

Play it safe, when fish on just carefully walk over and cut the downrigger cable.
ive lost a 18-20 on the opposite downrigger. you gona cut it? i damn well will. cap springs will run to opposite rigger snap off. ive lost about 3 20 lbs springs. biggest is over 30 at sandheads. keep your scissors or wire cuttors near your downriggers and just cut that **** off. ive snapped a beauty 20lbser oct 11 2020 at sunset on the opposite downrigger. ffs whats $50. nothing to me.

We can all tell by your boat how much your money means to you, lol.

I'm getting the popcorn buttered and opening a bottle of red.

All joking aside when I'm solo I only fish two rods each on their own downrigger. When a fish is on I keep it in gear and use the autopilot to keep the fish away from the boat and the other side. In 8 years I've only had two fish make a run for the other downrigger and succeed. Both times on the same outing at Hole in the Wall. The fish were CRAAZY that day! Every other time no problem. But when solo a double header turns into a cluster. I've seen guys fishing 4 rods solo, but that's too much for my heart.

Anyways - this is a report page so to keep the moderators' happy I was out last weekend and tried for feeders in the harbour. 2 undersized and saw a guy who was trolling delay a freighter's departure that was lifting anchor. The 5 horns didn't register. I'm sure Vancouver has a reputation amongst freighter captains. Never a dull moment out there........
