TOFINO, B.C. - About 2,500 Atlantic salmon have escaped from a Vancouver Island fish farm, the second incident involving a Mainstream Canada operation in a little more than a year.
The company said the fish escaped into Clayoquot Sound, on the island's west coast, last Thursday after an incident involving a harvesting boat.
Mainstream Canada spokeswoman Laurie Jensen said the fish escaped while a boat was harvesting fish from the company's Mussel Rock farm, and the company was still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
"It was faulty equipment," Jensen told Westcoaster.ca.
