"World Record" Rock sole

This past weekend some fishermen brought into the Sooke Harbour Marina some halibut that they had caught. They had a 5 lb one which the creel survey identified as a Rock Sole, the largest by far that he had ever seen. A search of the IFGA records show that the current world record for Rock Sole weighs 4 lbs, 15 ounces. Did they just miss an opportunity to enter the record books? Bet it tasted great!

Pretty positive those are petrales . Get them to like 8 lbs off epsom pt. They are very hard to distinguish but they grow much larger than rock sole . Here’s two of a handful we got this weekend . Big one is about 7 lbs

That is a petrale. Rock sole do not look anything like a petrale. Petrale have a large mouth with two rows of sharp teeth on the roof of the mouth. Rock sole have a small mouth and a large arch in the lateral line near the pectoral fin and they do not get anywhere near as big as a petrale. Rock sole also have rougher scales. You might mistake a large flathead for a small petrale but the flathead only has one row of teeth on the upper jaw. Rock sole and Petrale are two of the best eating fish on the coast IMO

That was my old man 😆
He said it tasted great!

I can't imagine that going through the hassle of getting into the record books for beating the old rock sole record by an ounce would feel like it was worth the effort. Having it as a wall-mount trophy, though...;)
