When Gulfstream V's REALLY Get Expensive.....

Above is a link to a pic of a Gulfstream V twin engine jet commonly used by people more wealthy than I.

One just like this is currently sitting at the airport at Masset with engine problems.
My buddy looks after most of the air cargo requirements for many of the lodges up there during the season but he's home now and we just had coffee during which time he told me the following.....more or less.

The jet belongs to someone from Hong Kong who is quite upset that his plane is broken down in such a remote place, as one can imagine, and my buddy is getting numerous e-mails per day from him.
The engine is a Roll-Royce engine so a crew of specialists have been there for nearly two weeks now trying to diagnose and repair the problem.........so far unsuccessfully.
My pal has been hoisting them up to the engine level in a box, using his forklift, and then letting them down as required. He's also operating full-time so this is a PITA for him, although somewhat lucrative as he's charging for his services etc.
The latest news is that Gulfstream is renting a C-130 Hercules and sending up a complete new engine from Florida. The engine is worth more than five million dollars and weighs 5000 lbs. and it's costing $380, 000.00 to take it up to Masset. Ouch!!
They asked my buddy if he'd mind unloading it but his forklift would be hard-pressed to safely lift that much plus he doesn't want to be involved handling something worth that much. Can't say I blame him.
Add up the cost of six or seven guys for nearly two weeks now all staying at Masset and you're starting to spend some money.
Ironically, my pal says the owner has just purchased a new Gulfstream G-650 which is a step up from the V and was hoping to sell the old one to help with buying the new.

As an aside, buddy says he has serviced a Quebec Government jet twice now as it flew people in to go fishing at one of the lodges.
Taxpayer funded fishing trips via private jet one wonders?????

Hmmmmmm........

Take care.
