A PANDA at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who sneaked into its pen hoping for a cuddle.

The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said.

"The panda, named Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," it quoted an unnamed worker as saying.

Zoo keepers managed to calm the bear and rescue Mr Liu, the report said.

"Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Mr Liu was quoted as saying from his hospital bed.

"I didn't expect he would attack."

Scientists believe fewer than 2000 giant pandas live in the wild in China.

A Touch of Disney for China’s Pandas

Make room, Pooh: Walt Disney Co. has found another cuddly bear to build its business in China.

The giant panda bear, long a beloved icon of China, will star in a new film tentatively called “Touch of the Panda,” which Disney announced on Monday.

The film marks Disney’s second film in China (the first was last year’s “Secret of the Magic Gourd”), and is part of a wider effort by the media company to make more locally relevant content. Even if the box office take isn’t especially large (”Magic Gourd” grossed only $2.7 million), the new film will boost Disney’s experience in creating content for China and help to build its back catalog of films there. And though relatively small, China’s market for movies is growing– In 2007, domestic box office receipts totaled $455 million, up 26% from the previous year.

Disney worked to develop the panda film during pre-production and filming, along with local producers Castle Hero Pictures and Ying Dong Media.

The film will come out next year. Disney hasn’t announced distribution plans in the U.S. yet, but says it will handle marketing and distribution around the world.

“Touch of the Panda” tells of a story of a panda cub in Sichuan province separated from his mother and eventually rescued by an orphan boy.

If that theme ends up making the film be seen as commemoration of last month’s Sichuan earthquake, that wasn’t the original intent — the film has been filming since Chinese New Year. “Our title in Chinese roughly translates to “The Panda’s Road Home,” perhaps made more poignant now in light of recent events in that part of China” said Stanley Cheung, the managing director of Disney in greater China.

The film was made in cooperation and supervision from the Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve in Sichuan, which was rocked by the earthquake. But Disney says none of the actors – human or bear – were hurt during the filming.
