The boat search.

It's actually really hard finding the right boat. Been looking for weeks and weeks. Found something I really liked here in Campbell River, phoned all week and unable to get a hold of the seller. Finally talked to him last night and he said he was going to Port Alberni Thursday that I could come look at it Friday morning. Well was I ever surprised and a little pissed when he phoned me tonight to tell me he sold it today. How can you buy the right boat if you can't even get a chance to look at it? Looking for a Striper somewhere around 2000 and 21-23ft preferably with an OB Budget of 30 000$. Anyone have any leads? Or know of something similar?

I know your looking for a OB, but there are a couple nice ones with Volvos on Portland Craigslist right now.

It seems there are many more of them south of the border. I have been watching/hunting Craigslist from Campbell River to California for the right 2101 for most of the last 2 years. They come up frequently enough, but the Canadian guys seem to think their boats are worth 50% more... When the time comes, and the wife gives the green light, I will be road tripping to 'Merica me thinks...

There sure is a lot of them south of the border. How much of a hassle is it to bring one back? What do you need? anyone done this?

I've brought back 2 or 3 over the years. No hassle as long as you have all your paperwork. You don't need to stop and export at US Customs like with a vehicle, just go directly to Canadian Customs, answer a few questions, provide paperwork, pay taxes on trailer and your fee for the trailer safety inspection and away you go.

Make sure the trailer VIN is good as per title or it could create problems to be allow into Canada. The Customs officers are only looking at the trailer/boat titles and your GST on the total purchase but they want the amount for the trailer separate from the cost of the boat. If you can get your bill of sale notarized, it is free in some States or 40.00-100.00 for mobile notary depending on the State. Make sure to declare any new accessories you purchase while in the USA. If you have your papers in order it should not take more than .5 hour at the border not counting line ups. The last boat I brought across was three years ago so the regs. might have change so check the Canada Border Agency website for any new changes. I have purchased 4 boats and never have them checked or hardly even look at/in the boat just the trailer.

Bought a boat in seattle last year, the trailer was the only problem because the manufactures label was worn off, (Escort trailers have this problem) so I had to pull a few strings there. If it doesn't shoot me an email and I'll let you know what to do. As for the money declare any money over 10000 to the canadian side before heading down and then let the American side know when going through. Yes have a receipt from where you purchased for the trailer and one for the boat, even if you buy it privately. When I came back I had to pay for the taxes on the trailer right away and the boat was later. Register your boat when you get back, and don't forget to talk to an insurance company before going down. I went and bought on a Sunday so had to line up insurance before I went down.
