Questions regarding fishing in this area:

1. Can you catch halibut and rockfish on the inside passages or do you have to run to the open ocean?

2. Do you typically have to run outside of the inlets for salmon? How far a run is it from ths port to the "Highway"?

3. Is the open ocean here more protected than areas further north?

4. Any additional comments about fishing this area?

Thanks, Hoss

no such thing as protected open water:DI found no difference in fishing from any were else on the west coast, but ni have mostly fishied on the outside waters

"1. Can you catch halibut and rockfish on the inside passages or do you have to run to the open ocean?"
Few and far between locals fish Halibut in a few inside places in colder months but we never got anything in the same places in summer.

"2. Do you typically have to run outside of the inlets for salmon? How far a run is it from ths port to the "Highway"?"
Tahsis Inlet has a few spots where Salmon hang out usually only bite on the tide change though.
Look to the 100 fathom mark on your chart for Spring Salmon success, deep too.
Figure over an hour maybe 90 minutes depending on how fast you go/how rough it is.

"3. Is the open ocean here more protected than areas further north?"
Nope

It's not magic find the fish and you'll get 'em but you need a decent sized boat/the right setup to get to where they are and stay on 'em.

We typically run out to the 50 fathom line, drop the gear and start heading out. When we hit fish we will start to run with the following seas if it's lumpy, if not we'll stay in that spot.

Easiest way to fish this area if it is big water is to run out Esperanza to the mouth and then head northwest, tucking inside Catala and follow that channel until you get out into the big water. Head due west to the 50 fathom line and then fish the following seas back southwest. Makes a shorter ride back against the lumps later.
