Squamish Streamkeepers Bringing Back Herring-Lecture/Slideshow Last Night

Headed out to the Nature Vancouver lecture/slideshow last night it was presented by a guy from Squamish who belongs to the local Streamkeepers.

They've been doing a lot of work trying to help the Herring who are always trying to spawn on/around the pilings up@ the terminal-and having some amazing success.

From what he said Herring drop a lot of eggs because a lot die but by covering the formerly toxic creosote pilings with various plastics they've been able to produce a success rate of upwards of 90% even 100% in some cases.

That means that in 3 years (they have a 3 year cycle) Herring are coming back in waves and the sky's the limit!

Well I guess the carrying capacity of the Salish Sea is the limit but for the moment there's enough food to keep them going.

This success brings all sorts of other things into focus-the resurgence of White Sided Dolphins on the Inside for instance-especially around Vancouver.

He touched a bit on other situations on this side of the Georgia Straight-suffice it to say that there remains a lot of work to do and all kinds of opportunity for volunteers to make a difference.

Little ironic isnt it??? These guys bust a gut trying to enhance a resident herring stock and DFO opens the spring herring fishery early so that industry can get a chunk of them!

If the opening is for the other side of the Straight they won't get many Squamish Herring.

Check your PMs.
