South Island lakes 2024

Too windy for the chuck so I went to Thetis lake. Water was 40F, no activity until noon. Around noon a small hatch with a few fish rising. Missed the only strike I had.

Neighbor said they were catching at Langford lake. Fellows coming off this morning said no fish today.
41C, only one good strike; peeled line and let go. Then the wind came up.

Interesting morning on Elk lake. Tried everything before connecting with a black leach behind a mini-flasher. Kept one for dinner. Quite a fighter and chubby before cleaning. Stuffed full of chironomids.

Came across pinnacles of bait out deep:
Edit: from another site "Those are stacks of old tires cabled together and thrown in the lake under the the guise of 'artificial reefs'. There's like eight of them I think in random spots around the lake."

Marked lots of fish:

Elk lake is warming up. Black leach produced. Not a bad way to finish the license year.

Prospect lake was 51F and the trout are active. Managed to lose most before getting them to the net. One even snapped off on it's second tug.
All on gold bead leaches, black, green, and red.

Elk was 49 F. Trout were active. Took a couple home.

Elk was 51F. Trout were hitting steadily.

Lake Cowichan. Air temperature minus 2 at 8 AM. Water 47-48 degrees. Sunny, light wind. Did not find any rainbow trout. Ended up with 2 cutthroat, 16 and 17 inch. Finicky today. They would only bite a small gold/glow spoon. They would ignore a large gold spoon, or small spoons of other colors. 18 to 30 feet deep, 2.0 MPH. Gorgeous day.

54 F and the trout are hitting steadily. 5 to the boat, released 3 smalls (10-12"). Lost at least a dozen others. Nice afternoon on Elk lake.
