Social Mapping of Pacific Herring in the Salish Sea....

Hello All,

I would like to introduce you a grass roots project aimed to engage British Columbians with a social map created by the people for the fish!

What and Why?
The purpose of this project is to map the presence and spawning grounds of Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) in participating regions. This information will provide us with spatial patterns and, in the future, temporal patterns.

The conservation of this cornerstone species is extremely important as Pacific Herring are important sources of food for many animals including bears and salmon.

Mapping the spawning grounds of Pacific Herring will allow for direct action to be taken that maximize conservation results. This includes utilizing "herring curtains" that promote chemical-free surfaces for eggs.

Your observations of spawning grounds, herring, and/or indicative bird species will contribute to this community mapping project that has concrete results.

The overall goal is to raise public awareness of the importance of the Pacific Herring and ultimately influence decision making at the highest level.

Who?

Who is setting this up?

The map has been established in a joint effort of the Worlds Fisheries Trust(http://www.worldfish.org/) and The Salish Sea Herring Enhancement Society(no website yet…) and uses the inaturalist.org mapping platform.

Who is it for?

This is meant to be publicly driven and anyone can easily create a login and make a posting. We obviously encourage the many dedicated groups working hard in herring enhancement and conservation to embrace the project and use it as a sharing tool for us all to learn with.

Of course as this is for the people, by the people, we openly encourage any and all feedback in order to make this project as successful as possible.

When?

We are live!! The site is now active. I made a post to start it off but will soon flood it with sightings and reports. We hope to have many contributions from qualified people like yourselves before releasing with a press release to the public at large.

Where?

Although the website currently states the Salish Sea, we are open to submissions from anywhere in BC.

Thank you for your time and I invite you to check it out and share with others that you know would be interested.

The mapping is one part of the overall project; part 2 will focus on DNA testing of local populations. More to come...

Sincerely, for the fish,

Andrew
