Two people are in hospital, one in critical condition, after a shooting at a marina in Cowichan Bay, north of Victoria, on Wednesday morning.

RCMP spokesman Corp. Darren Lagan said an altercation between two men broke out on the deck of a cabin cruiser docked at the Bluenose Marina at around 8 a.m. He confirmed that the incident escalated when a firearm was discharged several times.

One man was airlifted to hospital in Victoria, while the other was taken by road ambulance to Cowichan District Hospital.

Witnesses earlier said two men were shot, one in the head, while the other was wounded in his back. Lagan said he could not confirm the injuries suffered by either.

Lagan also said he could not confirm what the dispute was about.

A large section of Cowichan Bay has been cordoned off as police investigate.

One man is in critical condition in hospital with gunshot wounds and another man who was also shot is in police custody after an argument this morning in the small community of Cowichan Bay took a violent turn.

A 62-year-old Cowichan Bay man was air-lifted to hospital at about 8 a.m. after the altercation with a 54-year-old, also from Cowichan Bay, in front of the Bluenose Marina on Cowichan Bay Road.

RCMP were not saying whether more than one gun was involved. It is not known how many shots were fired.

The fight took place just before 8 a.m. Police responded to calls and flooded the area with cruisers, closing down Cowichan Bay Road and redirecting traffic. The community is about 50 minutes north of Victoria.

By Wednesday afternoon, the older man’s condition at Victoria General Hospital was still listed as critical. The younger man had been treated for his injuries at the Cowichan District Hospital and then released into police custody, said Cpl. Darren Lagan, RCMP spokesman.

“I stress that we have not yet laid any charges against either male, and we are not at a point in the investigation where we will speculate on who did what, where, and when. We are working through the evidence, and constantly gathering new evidence,” said Lagan.

The shooting was not a random act, Lagan said, adding the two men knew each other.

Cowichan Bay resident Barb Anderson was on her morning walk at about 8 a.m. when she came upon the two men lying on the road.

Police had just arrived and were taping off the area. Anderson said both men are well-known residents of Cowichan Bay.

Tony Owen lives on his boat at the Bluenose marina. Police told residents who want to leave that they will require a police escort, and that they will not be allowed back in until after the crime scene is cleared.

Deven Jones manages the Bluenose Marina. She said that everyone in the community is in shock over the incident and confirmed that one of the men involved moors a powerboat at the marina. “He’s a very friendly old gentleman,” Jones said.

“It’s a very peaceful place,” Jones said. “This all still feels very unreal.”

At 3:30 p.m., the main road through Cowichan Bay was still closed. Access to residents was not restricted, however, they could only move in and out of the area under a police escort. Police are working to re-open the road this afternoon, but say that they may maintain the crime scene as late as tomorrow.

Police are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken with them to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment at 250-748-5522.

My parents work with the wife of a fire-rescuer who got the story and he said that the two guys were arguing, when one of them pulled out a shotgun and shot the other guy. The guy who GOT shot, then took the shotgun from the guy who shot him, shot HIM (the initial shooter), and beat him to the ground and put him into critical condition. The initial shooter was then airlifted out, while the guy who first got shot went to the cvrd (duncan) hospital.

Nope - you're all wrong.

I heard the guy who got shot first wouldn't give up his 'favorite Hali-hole secret' and things digressed from there.

Strange though, I worked at the Blue-Nose as an apprentice marine-mechanic (for a one-week gong-show) back in 82' and the place was more like granola-munching on Saltspring.
